Sid Meier warns the games industry about monetisation

I dont understand why people who truly hate this game don't just move on.

Probably for the very unlikely event top management just wakes up one day and realizes its time to address fundamental issues with the game and return to communication with the fanbase. Its happened before Ready Or Not Pre-Alpha seemed dead in the water for like 2 years with people actively seeking out the Devs location in real world real time ( Read: Thai/hookers/blow). Most left the Discord despite the $120 loss figured it was vaporware when One fine Sunny day BOOM -a real beta appeared with functional AI and everything and a whole new production value. Its nowhere near perfect but many original subscribers were shocked that this pretty fine product suddenly resurrected itself from the Tomb.

So something like that lil miracle is probably why.

I'm expecting those skins in MP to eventually be monetized with ingame currency. I see no other explanation for making us grind for skins (alot of those skins currently found in SP) with gold and the focus on the class system.
That is exactly what I have been thinking as well. The only reason to stick with clunky "features" that essentially have killed Bannerlord is that they are hoping that eventually the game will become popular and they can turn on the money printing machine. (aka mtx)

I'll pre-order their space game that I'll never play just to p!ss you off.
you can set your money on fire then piss on them for all you like. as if i give a f lol
I'll be painting them while you are crying about not having fun. Then maybe I'll play a little Bannerlord this weekend and enjoy myself.
fun is subjective, and criticism of a games doesn't = crying. nor does it mean i'm not having fun playing it. you jump to too many conclusions in your head fantasies.

don't think anyone here truly hates the game. and the fact that you think that makes me feel you are some kind of extremest who takes any little comment to the very extreme. i'm just super glad you didn't grow up in the middle east

I spent a ton of money on a new computer to play Cyberpunk and ended not buying it (and still havent) due to early reviews. Hell, I remebr getting wood from the first teaser of Duke Nukem Forever and never purchasing it due to reviews.

M&B and then Warband are the reason I bought the EA for Bannerlord. I'm old, my tastes or purchasing habits aren't having any impact on the gaming industry. Bannerlord is the only game I've played for more than 10 hours since it was released. I enjoy it but I understand the criticism. I do get a ton of enjoyment watching people complain though. I like watching you guys bang your head against the wall repeatedly while you expect a different outcome. If I dislike a game and it never gets a second thought or another penny from me.

I also pre-ordered Victrix Norman Cavalry that cost me more than this game.

Similar story here. Built a new (my first) computer to play Bannerlord and DayZ. But ended up not buying Bannerlord, cuz it just seems like it's worse than the previous games, in many ways. And seeing the developing rates, as well as TW's attitude, it seems like they aren't going to add any more real features to this game until release. And this game has a LONG way to go before it becomes a worthy sequel, and worth the money, in my opinion.

I find it rather fascinating that so many seem to put TW in the same box as EArts and Activision (just purchased by Bull Gates and Microsoft!)

@froggy Consoles.... Yeah, today in 2022, the majority of "gamers" are aim assist 60 fps sofa "gamers", average price of a console game is much higher than the average price of a PC game - even if we take out all the trash from the PC games scene and only mention 3A titles. Consoles cant be upgraded customised. Easy to monitor users. Easy and fast to produce games for consoles since its hardware is the same. Games is now made for consoles first and then ported to PC - not the other way around, as it should be. Games has been dumped down to the point where im starting to fear the future of (real) gaming. Especially in the recent GPU "shortage" events, it seems to me that they are trying to kill PC gaming.

because the moment game makers start caring about that paycheque more than making games in order to create the most fun experience

their games suffer. and their fans leave.

if you've been on this forum for the last 3 years you'd know exactly what i'm talking about.

before Early release it was full engagement.... then the release and money.... then slowly less and less responses, then nothing.... and the number of people on the forums has shrank like 10x. number of concurrent players... probably less than 1% of launch week.
and of course those statistics make any creator lose their drive to keep working. especially since they ALREADY GOT THE MONEY.

in the last 2 years. aside from implementing perks have they added anything in the gameplay mechanics aspect? update after update all i see is graphic stuff, armor sets, city scenes and villages etc.

the actual part of the game that's fun, the battles. saw little to 0 improvements and many changes out right make the game worse.

what about modding support? this game would have died year and a half ago, but it has been running on its last legs for the last 1.5 years solely because of mods and the passion modders put into their work. and i see so many of them quitting because of TW 's lack of modding support and constant incessant useless updates that force everyone to start over.

so aside from the fame and billions and big corpo media. TW is killing their games much like EA and other big corpo companies for the same reason: "money > fun".

That's the thing... you do you and I'll do me. I want you to buy the games you enjoy and not buy the ones you don't enjoy. It's a shame people bought a game they don't like. We've all been there, my Steam Library is filled with shame.

I enjoyed Bannerlord after the initial disappointment. I'm pacing myself and playing occasionally until it's done. I'm hoping there are mods released to make up for the areas BL is lacking once the release is stable and keeping upnwith updates isnt a big deal. I've already gotten my monies worth, though, and think I'll still be playing BL for years. Possibly as much as I played Warband.

There is a silver lining to BL making money if you are one of the ones who disliked it. The more successful this unique genre is, the more likely someone will try and make a competitor.

Don't take me too seriously. I just post every so often when I'm checking patch notes. It's probably best to ignore me and I just wander off for a few weeks.

Oh if only things were that simple but this aint always true. Depends how easy something is to replicate in another Engine really. Generally, other companies can replicate the MultiPlayer portion of any game -but not the singleplayer if it is advanced and/or unique ( AI expensive). Look at the Arma series -been around since 2001 as Operation Flashpoint -now most people have or at least know of Arma3 as the only real military cross armed simulator/game and not one other company has successfully copied it. At least not in Singleplayer. In multiplayer - of course DayZ came out of it and the open world survival genre in which there are a million clones -but Singleplayer..? Not one. Many reasons for this but im hoping that one day im wrong and rivals show up for both this game and Arma in Singleplayer.

Tales of Glory (Solo dev) in Virtual Reality was an utter surprise to me -its basically Mount and Blade 1 (tiny overhead world) with simplified world mechanics but an absolutely amazing Fight world with potentially hundreds of melee and Horse units duking it out with real direction blocks etc.. in real time. Very, very impressive imo

Not sure anyone could make an actual competitor to M&B without doing things that may lead to them eventually getting sued.

In this sense, if games were sodapops, M&B would be Coca Cola.

This is why we are all so keen on improving the game because theres noone else who can do it, we cant look elsewhere for someone else to cook our crack. Sweet sour experience.

not sure anyone wants to based on the fan base reaction to the original. this is a small niche market
they cannot possible patent the genre and has already been replicated by other companies in ways, just google bannerlord like games

If someone else make a 4-directional melee pvp combat game that plays exactly the same as M&B, TW has a good case for sure.

I doubt anyone CAN do it though, if someone made a similar game, it wouldnt feel the same, I dont think thats possible without blantantly copy paste

Just like souls like game, know your audience and what will attract them.

difference being fromsoft is a japanese company with their craftsman sentiment bred into their bones from thousands of years. they'd rather commit seppuku than put out an incomplete game
and as a result of dedicating themselves to making the best game possible and complete mastery of their craft.
in 10 years or so and many new installments. the "souls like" games genre has become a mainstream genre with mainstream level of fandom and look at the launch of elden ring. omfg lol it's a blockbuster name now. google souls like games and you'll find an endless list. but none has nearly as much of fame as the original.

When it come to games, Japan is like Germany and engineering.

BUT... They make games for consoles first and port it to PC, not visa versa. They pick the easy way. Germans dont.

Yes, and the series became mainstream after years of dedicated improvements upon the genre. Similar with mount and blade, each iteration is supposed to be an improvement of the previous. There will be other games replicating the genre but this is a good thing for the genre. It means it's getting more attention.

As for Japanese craftsman, it's rather untrue to say all video games in Japan are made with care. It just tends to be we see only the good games imported from the east and the other way from west to east. The culture might be different, but terrible dev studio's exist everywhere regardless of culture of people.

You do realize that this is pretty much straight up racist stereotyping, right? Japanese game studios make **** games just like studios from all countries do. Fromsoft are not better because they are Japanese, they are better because this particular company has the ethos of making good games. Has nothing to do with nationality and all to do with gathering a group of like-minded people who want to actually make good games.

here comes the keyboard social justice warrior white knight whose IQ is so high he can't comprehend jokes.
Yes, and the series became mainstream after years of dedicated improvements upon the genre. Similar with mount and blade
i'm making the argument that the company that made mount and blade is actively trying to kill their franchise with their second installment of the series, you might disagree with me, but saying M&B is becoming mainstream? lol it had the chance during the first month of ER. but we know the rest now don't we....
BUT... They make games for consoles first and port it to PC, not visa versa.
well the souls series is an action hack n slash which is a very console based genre of games. whereas M&B isn't quite so. personally i think it's easier to make a pc game since you don't have as much hardware restrictions and aren't subject to console generation change every 6-8 years.
