Should I put it back in the chest?

If this is a spoiler please delete or something.  I dunno.
But I went right over to Rane and opened the chest and grabbed the Gem.  I'm only around level 6 right now and it doesn't seem like I can do anything with it right now.  I know I don't want to sell it, and I sure as hell don't want to lose it next time I get my arse kicked (which will probably happen again in about 10 mins).

Should I put it back in there for the time being?  Ya know for safe keeping? Or can I use it, or should I wait till later?

There are many uses for a Qualis Gem.

You simply need to find them.

On the other hand, if you wish to save it for founding knighthood orders and such, then putting it back in the chest could be a viable option.

  This is one of the interesting aspects of the game.  What the hell to do with these and when.  You can find ways to use them now.. but as Misguided mentions, they are more useful later.  By far the best weapons in the game come from these gems.. I doubt anyone yet has one of the Legendary weapons, but.. with cheats I could be wrong.  As you play, uses for them come up. 

As for a cheat.. no.  You can find one at the start of the game.  But therein lies the challenge.. what the hell to do with it?  On one level you want to sell it, or use it to increase your stats.. but in the early game that is not such a big deal.. mid game however, having one is a huge issue and you pay in blood to get your hands on them.

Thank you for the speedy replies as always.  It's kind of what I figured.  It will be more useful later.  I'm working as a mercenary for Ravenstern for now so I think I'm gonna go put it back for now. 
It sure was tempting to pawn it though but none of the merchants have that much cash yet anyway.  Can't wait to figure out what to do with it though.

i found a book merchant which told me he would give me the coords of some mines if i trade him a gem, should i go for it ?

I got the rumor in a tavern where you pay 200 gold for the location to get the chest in Rane. I was wondering if the chest was locked without that rumor, but I guess not.

I'd like to know if the Janos chest is really there, since when the original city was rebuilt in Native, they seemed to have removed the chest.

I did my due diligence and scouted the city on foot, but didn't find it.  However a couple posts on the board made reference to this chest as well as the other two, unless I'm mistaken.  So just to confirm - IS there a chest in Janos in PoP 2.0?

I think the only chests in the game are Valonbray and Rane.

Personally I don't like the placement of the chests. I prefered it how in the older version of M&B (I think it was .80 you had to jump up roofs to get the chest.

The original plan was to make the maps lead the player to a randomly spawning encampment.  The chests would be there, not in the city.

However, while the whole "make a camp spawn" thing could be made to work, (like the mines), the "randomly spawning chest with specified items in it" part of the problem proceeded to buffalo Saxondragon pretty badly.

Using the city chests and tying their contents to the results of npc interactions was difficult enough, honestly, and insisting on the roving chests would have extended the release date of 2.0 more than SD wanted.

So, the current chest system is a compromise, and not what was envisioned.  It will be tweaked in further patches/releases I'm sure.

I found the Gem in Rane, im lvl 27 and I dont know what to do with them. How do you use them to found orders anyway?Or to get legendary weapons??

The Qualis Gem is a prequiste for certain Knighthood Orders AMONGST others. Like owning a certain town or castle or companion. If you already got a town or castle, go to your steward and try to ask him about Knighthood Order. He´ll have a talk with you if you fit the requirements.

IF you talk to the booksellers, one will offer to exchange your Qualis Gem for various things. No enchanted weapons yet but the first step towards them. And late game some nice boosts
