I want to be ruler so I was waiting for them to just die of old age, but it is taking way to long. should I friendly-fire them to death in battle or is there a better way? and would this cause the other vassals to hate me?
With the native death system being what it is you could try and join the same battles as them and hope they go down and die, only other way to kill a character is to capture and execute them. I don't think there's any way to assassinate a character without using a mod such as this:

yes, friendly fire them to death yourself.
-join their army
-find them during battle
-shoot them in the head till they are wounded
-repeat till they die for real
