NordMann 2

Sergeant at Arms
Hi

So I have played Mount&blade for some time and i have broken a lot of shields.
BUT! The thing is that shields make weird sounds.
Ok, I'll admit that some sounds are real.
But shields that are steel or metal or those kinda things, make the same sound as if you would have hit a wooden shield.
And i think thats it messed up pretty bad, cuz metal(swords) against metal(shields) should make some kind of "metal" sound, if you know what i mean.

Well, unfortunately, engine limitations here. No way for the game to tell a wooden and iron shield apart, cause they are the same object class.
Sure, it's a bummer, but I think nothing's to be done.

Aww.....thats too bad
It would really make the game better though. Not that Moun&Blade is bad, but you know what i mean.

Well yeah, it's all in the little details like that.

Thing is, I dunno how sounds work in the module system. Perhaps it's fixable by adding some kind of a check - if resistence above certain treshold, play different sound.

EDITH: Uo, I got me a pennant on me pointy stick.

Very few shields were steel. And those were usually only bucklers.

Basically plywood, with a linnen or thin leather covering, somethimes with a metal rim or reinforce.

As Brasidus said most of shields were wooden. Only really small were made from metal and there is a good reason for that. We are talking about thing that serve the purpose of saving your life and not just in one occasion but during whole time of battle. The faster you can manipulate it the better it serves you. Now just imagine how much full metal kite shield would weight considering the fact it should be think enough to resist any weapon. I dont think you will be able to lift it fast enough to block arrow or blow. But even if you can manage it 2-3 times that thing will make you so exhausted you hardly will be able to keep on fighting.

That's why  lifting shields (the bigger ones especially) is actually bad practice. Much better to simply duck behind. It uses your knees this way, and doesn't tire the arms that much.

Also, if the rims and the bob is metal, they damn better make a clang sound when struck, non?

Some shields actually do make "metal sounds" when struck in combat. I noticed hearing those sounds a lot while fighting against the Khergits, and since I've captured and started using one of their Elite Cavalry Shields; I get the metallic sound every time I block something.

Most shields were/are wooden, though (with some cultures using animal hides for most of the shield, and "solid" materials only for its structure).

Well I dont like combat sounds in Native anyway. Personally I prefer the ones that were in EG mod. Think its called Cries of War soundpack.
