MP Shields are op and there aren't enough skills to open up an opponent

go the crpg route

Make shields a fair bit weaker/warband lvl and give shield wall bonus's so if your standing next to a team mate your shield is stronger, the longer the wall the better it is! crpg did it by adding 1 shield skill per person up to 7, was a pretty interesting mechanic and increases the tactics you can use

The main problem with shields is still the invisible force field. They protect where they are not. Sometimes they also don't protect where they are, make them a physical object. And sure, reduce shield HP and give javelin handles bonus against shield (that works and makes it so spears doesn't get bonus against shields as well).

The problem with shields is the exact opposite, they do not have enough force field. This is an RPG game with stats, not a pure action game. Warband's shielders could block anything infront and this is how it should be. Infantry is by the weakest unit in the game in general. Also kickslash is a glitch, because it makes the swings faster due to bad animation blend.

imo its better if they increase the shield size rather than adding a forcefield

Forcefields are ridiculous. Removing the magic forcefield can be compensated for by also letting shields protect where they are when not holding right click.
The problem is that the movement of the shield is a bit restricted. For example during a sige on a ladder you get quite often hit in the head, because you can not raise your shield high enough to protect it.

And for some reason you can shoot right through the shield when right click is not being pressed.

As OGL says thats a blatant lie, with poor aim you can hit their shield by accident.

Shields have passive defence against ranged as far as I know, just not against melee, same as Warband.

They don't block as much damage in melee but they do prevent some damage. (You probably already know that though).

It's harder to see for ranged but I've stabbed through shields plenty enough to know they are not physical objects in this game.

That's correct, unless you have an active block up, a shield will not stop an incoming melee strike. Whereas if you have your shield down at your side not pressing block at all, if an archer shoots from that side and the arrow lands anywhere the shield is covering, it will strike the shield.

Shields are easier to shoot around in Bannerlord than they are in Warband though, Bows are much more accurate. Also depending on where the person wielding the shield is blocking it can leave them partially exposed. Some shields if you down block for better body protection it leaves your head exposed, blocking to the right will leave your left exposed and vice versa, up blocking protects your head better but leaves your legs exposed.

All the archer has to do is look at where you're blocking and aim accordingly. Though terrain can affect that, IE, up blocking to protect your upper body if an archer is above you will make it difficult for them to shoot around your shield and other such situations.

Here's a balanced solution suited for M&B combat:

Just make the shields break quite fast (maybe something along the lines of 10 hits with a normal 1 handed sword, faster with an axe) if you don't block with them in the right direction. If you block in the right direction, they should take very little damage and make them last way longer.

This right here makes it useful to have a shield because it obviously gives you protection against projectiles AND also protects you from a few hits that you aren't able to block. If you are blocking with a weapon, it can block forever if you are good enough. This should be the case with shields too (though shields would still take a bit of damage on succesfull block). If you can't block, you shouldn't be able to just hold out forever like you are now with a shield. Instead, the shield should only help a little, making it mainly an arrow catcher and a small help in melee defence.
