Shield skill

I always use a shield, and I know the skill matters.  If you have a low skill, it takes a long time to switch from block to strike.  So I decided to get it up to at least 4, but I just started a new game, I'm fighting in the arena with a skill of 1, and I find it's really not that bad.  Now I'm wondering if I've been wasting skill points.  Maybe I could go through the whole game with a shield skill of 2.  Opinions?

Doesn't the skill also affect the amount of damage the shield can take before breaking?  If so, if you're going to keep the skill low, you might want to carry a bastard sword so you can boost your 1h skill while the shield is up, and your 2h skill after the shield breaks.

Yeah, it does.  But a reinforced shield of any sort will take enough damage that you don't really have to worry about it.

The skill also improves coverage.  You can see it really well in the late stage tournaments when you get a bow and the other guy has a sword and shield.  If you're matched with a Hired Blade, that's going to be a really hard fight because you're not going to be able to hit him with an arrow while he's blocking with his shield.  But you're matched against one of my companions who all have shield skill 0, it's easy because you can shoot their feet even while they're blocking.

Coverage is another concern I have especially since I'm going to use a heater shield which is smaller than the huscarl shield I'm used to.

I always use a heavy morningstar as my melee.  On foot I fight with it two-handed unless I'm greatly outnumbered or getting shot at.

I'd expect that the only major problems you're going to run into are at tourneys, then, when you don't have any choice what weapons you get.  Also fighting the Rhodoks, who already have good coverage from their shields, but that's only if you try to shoot at them--cleaving their skulls with your morningstar would avoid that problem!

Yeah, I've bee playing in the arena with a shield skill of 2 for a while, and I'm going back to my original thinking.  If shields are at all a part of your combat routine, you should get a skill of at least 4.
