Shield Protection when reloading a Crossbow

If I have a shield on my back (preferably a large Rhodok board shield I guess) and I turn my back on any enemy archers when I'm reloading my crossbow will that shield protect me from their arrows?  Or do you actively have to engage the blocking action for a shield to work?  In reality this would be obvious ie the shield would block arrows but do the Warband game mechanics cater for this?

Yes, yes they do. It should generate a message saying "Received 0 damage!" "Hit shield on back!" unless this has been recently adjusted. You wouldn't get complete protection though, legs and head will still be fair game. Not sure how the area of the shield is calculated either.
