Hmm, I'd suggest you split up the current tree so you can't upgrade all your troops from a single pool.

You could offer scythian mercenaries for your horse archers for instance. It seems kinda off for the greeks to upgrade to horse archers as the top of the horse tree.

I am making good progress on the troop trees. While only the athenians are currently in-game, I have all but two cities' trees planned.

I have also completed a linothorax model with several different textures, some distictly spartan, and greaves.

I still need some suggestions on how to divide the cities between the factions, and what the faction names should be. Included cities are (see map, with magnifying glass, in first post for locations):
Amphipolis
Pella
Apollonia
Dodona (possibly independent as it was the sactuary of Zues)
Larissa
Phthiotis (possibly independent to Myrmidons (maybe black knights))
Ambrakis
Askatos
Trachis
Thebes
Delphi (Zendar)
Athens
Korinth
Argos
Rhion
Pylos
Sparta
Olympia (Training Ground)
--------Cities on map but unreachable, included for depth of world----------
Knossos
Delos
Lindos
Hallicarassus
Ilium
maybe more. . .

Hi Talon,

looks like you decided for classical period after all, judging from the above post. If so I suggest that you have the factions of:

- the Delian alliance for Athens and

- the Peloponnesian alliance for Sparta.

Distributing cities between the two shouldn`t be hard, lots of info out there starting with Thukydides.

Regards, Oldtimer

Actually I was hoping to avoid any real historical accuracy. That would require learning or some crap like that. If I had chosen that period I could easily have divided them myself, because as you said, theres a lot of information out there. Plus that arrangement would not be the best for playability.
I hope that did not come across as rude, I didn't mean it that way. I appreciate your response.

I know absolutely nothing about programming or modelling but I am pretty well acquainted with the intricacies of Greek warfare in the hoplite period.

If you don't want historical accuracy, that's fine. If you'd like any information though, I'd be glad to help.

Just in my opinion, the heroic age would be a better setting as the M&B engine with its chaotic melees seems ill suited to the classical hoplite era. As others have said though, you could mix classic equipment and the heroic age setting to get the best of both worlds. A Trojan War era setting would allow two opposing factions and plenty of quests etc.

If you want to avoid any real Historical accuracy I suggest you to do this:
Greek cities were independent, so you can organise them into many small factions.
Depending on the circunstances, cities could become allies or enemies. See, "A shield lying on the water" mod to understand better what I'm saying.

Talon, you can add Sardis, on Western Anatolia, north of Halicarnassus.

You can't avoid historical accuracy totally, but almost. You can fill the gap of historical things with mythology. I can help you with that if you want. As possible as I can, of course. There are still things that I do not know clearly.

Sardis, Ephesus, Miletus, Mitylene, Skyros, Thera, Ithika. . .it should look like a big world

and

OH CRAPPOS. . .SPARTANS!

Hello, Talon.
Do you still need troop trees? And for which cities?

I will be glad to help (cause noone helps me in my efforts for now) =).

I have most of the cities done, but not every city has its own progression, I have it divvied up like this:
-Sparta, Phthiotis, and Delphi have individual lines of progression
-Pella and Amphipolis have troop trees that share a progression
-Athens, Thebes, and Korinth share
-Argos Pylos, and Rhion share
-Larissa, Trachis, and Dodona share

That leaves Askatos, Ambrakia, and Apollonia that do not have trees yet. As well as alterative names, and trees for river pirates, mountain bandits, steppe bandits, forest bandits, sea raiders, and black khergits.

I want to do the remaining cities myself because I have a list I'm working from. But PLEASE feel free do work up some greek sounding aliases for these other guys.

Talon, I knew that I have posted these pictures before, but take a look at them. Those might come useful to you.

Wow! that spartans soldiers seems really nice!

Could you post more pictures of them? These shields don't let us see all the items.

My video drivers keep crashing while playing M&B, but I will get some more screens up this weekend for sure.

Another thing that I could use some assistance with, or just some recommedations, is a way to visually distinguish troops from different cities. My current idea is to have differentiating shield emblems, ie. spartans have a lambda, athenians have either an owl or an alpha, myrmidons an ant, etc. (actually thats as far as I got). Ideas?
Some troops will have specific armour, ie. spartans have red cloaks, shirts, and plumes; athenians wear attikan helmets, myrmidons wear black.

So using this method, which cities should have what emblem?
Amphipolis-?
Pella-?
Apollonia (I assume apollo themed)-?
Dodona (zeus themed)-?
Larissa-?
Phthiotis-ant
Ambrakis-?
Askatos-?
Trachis-?
Thebes-?
Delphi (apollo themed)-?
Athens (athena themed)-owl or alpha
Korinth-?
Argos-?
Rhion-?
Pylos-?
Sparta- lambda
