Set a large fire on the outskirts of this village

The fact that I killed the key holder, then killed all the guards (four in total I think) then went back to get the Jarl and more guards spawned was annoying too.

A strange thing to nitpick, technically if the prison guard yelled jailbreak in a castle or town you'd have most of the garrison down upon you, rather than just a few.  I don't bother with this when its in a faction I'm at war with, but frequently rescue lords from neutral towns/castles.

Oh, a question about the fire thing. Does it become visible on the map (like its being raided)? I asked for it in an hour and waited but it didn't seem to change. Went in and saved the guy and didn't fight any less guards so either the town were "yeah we'll do it! sucker!" or I waited too long.

No, it doesn't cause any visual effect (not that I have noticed). Either I hadn't noticed or they changed it in 1.122 but it does show a fire similar to when it is being raided
You probably did wait too long. I never wait, I ask for it and then I head in. Figure it takes about an hour to travel from most villages to castle/town. Also I have noticed if you sneak in and go do anything else first (like say hit the tavern for a pint or go trade) and then go walk the streets the guards have respawned in full. It is also possible that it does not have a 100% chance of working, but someone who has actually looked at the script would have to say.

Yes....I was saying this is a good relation gain quest for the earlier stages of the game, implying you don't have any faction enemies so you enter a town with full kit. I personally don the pilgrim disguise that Jeremius wears when you first hire him, and wear a hood as a nerf to me and my weapons....I didn't sneak into the town therefore can freely bear arms. This is a roleplay thing for me to get more enjoyment from that quest. I get good weapons for these self appointed rescues by fighting in local arena matches, which I have modified using TweakMB to twice the normal amount. Good combat practice for getting ganged up on too. And using the 'set fire one hour from now' works as long as you travel directly to the town/castle and walk around immediately. Remember, since you can rescue from a friendly or neutral faction, you have full kit...including your horse...so feel free to use it in the prison break-in portion of the quest if you have trouble....

It sounds like if you do it while neutral it is fine. My beef is that: (a) in unmodded, I do not have a way to turn most of my party into a second party (except leave them at a garrison) and become a stealthy infiltration force so I can approach the fief and have a reasonable chance to sneak in (yes it does make a diff); (b) once I do the "Disguise myself" & sneak in part when jailbreaking from a hostile faction, I should have additional options besides just _fight the whole garrison with a stick_. I agree that if you tried it, a large force would try to apprehend you (even 4 is not really realistic) but then the whole thing right now is not 'realistic.' I just think that with a few more dialogue options very similar to other ones that already exist in the game, the jailbreak quest could be a lot more intereresting under all conditions, against enemy while neutral, etc. Not saying it isn't a well-designed part of the game: it is. But it is well-designed because it is (like much of the game) skeletal, open-framed, and could easily be expanded upon in mods. The whole game is that way really. Look at all the unused doors and blocked off passages in towns and even castles. A couple more statements to my rant and then I'll shutup: the modding community for this game has been absolutely heroic, and I seriously kneel and pay homage. Any of you who have done any modding are to be applauded because you have so enriched this game and this game's community *applauds*
