Serial Key too long

Bought the retail version, and not wanting to have to play with steam, downloaded from Taleworlds. The serial key is too long however. I read that if you can find a shorter version of your key on Steam so created an account, but can't figure out how to get it. Any help? Searched but the only person with a similar problem had installed via steam and his problem was that he couldn't register Warband on Taleworlds.

I've tried uninstalling and then installing with steam, but for some reason it can't find my login details.

Right-click the game in Steam, View game CD key. This is from Library -> Games.

If not working, grab it from the registry:
1) Start, search/run: regedit
2) Browse (click the +) to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\MountAndBladeWarbandKeys

I didn't install via steam and it doesn't seem to know that i've got Warband installed. And now it won't let me install the steam version

Though your second option gave me an idea. I'll quickly try it

Edit: Didn't work. Is it possible to swap serial keys?

You have to install the game via Steam.
This is the only way to get the shorter key for the download version.

So lets get that working, what was the issue?

My Search-fu says, try deleting ClientRegistry.blob from the Steam folder and try again.

Every time I delete it, it reappears a few seconds later

Have you tried reinstalling steam?

Did you close Steam first?
One user posted a reboot fixed it.

Or try to start again.
Close Steam, uninstall. Delete the Steam folder and registry keys.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Steam
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Valve\Steam
Reboot, reinstall.

Have you tried reinstalling steam?

It won't uninstall. It gives me an error and then the progress bar doesn't go any further

Yay for steam, anyway try removing it this way Start->Control Panel->Add or Remove Programs, search the list for steam.

Reboot, reinstall.

Do the same as above, but reboot first and ignore uninstall. Oh, disable any antivirus before reinstall too. And remember to run as administrator if your on Vista/7.

Tried that but it's not there

I deleted it from program files but when i try downloading it, it only gives me the option to repair though the download stops half way through
