Screen turning black

I just downloaded the game yesterday and I really enjoy it, definately going to buy it when i get my paycheck next week.

I only encountered one problem with the game. Sometimes when i\'m in the middle of combat the monitor just turns black and it seems as though there is no signal from the graphics card. It could be the card there is something wrong with, but M&B is the only game that has this problem. I have tried installing the newest drivers for my card but that didnt help.

Any idea what might be wrong?

I have exactly the same problem. I have a geforce 4 mx 440 vga card and the latest drivers. I also have DX 9.0c. Can someone please help us?

I'm running on a Geforce 4 at the moment, and it's working fine.

Could be an overheat problem.

If it happens regularly, it may be down to screensaver or monitor power down features. Try disabling those if they're active.

One thing it may be worth trying is to alt-tab out of the game when this occurs. If the desktop appears then the problem is likely software rather than hardware related.

Do you still get sound when the screen goes black, or is the PC resetting?

When this happens the screen turns black, the signal from the vga is lost, you can hear no music or other in game sounds, alt+enter is not working and the pc doesn't reset (however it is still on). Any other ideas? I've tried what you told me but nothing worked and I have no overheat problems with this vga... Thnx for your responce man

Is there any activity on the hard drive when this occurs?
Is the monitor detecting a signal? (usually the power LED will turn orange or red if there is no signal).

Would be useful to know the rest of the system specs - OS, soundcard, RAM, processor. Is there only the one card, or does the system have an onboard graphics adapter too?

No there is no activity in the hard drive. The power led of the monitor turns orange after 5 seconds since it turned black. My OS is windows XP SP1, my sound card is onboard (AC'97), my mobo is a QDI Kudoz (with no graphics card onboard) and my cpu is an AMD Athlon XP 2200+. I have 768 MB of DDR 266 RAM... :S

First thing is to check there is nothing that might cause the PC to power down or power off - no hibernation or power saving modes active, no screensaver.

Try turning off everything else that's running in the background too - use start -> run -> Msconfig. Click the startup tab, click disable all and then ok. Reboot when prompted. Could be something kicking in in the background which is causing the problem.

Is it happening at the same time everytime, or does it occur at random?

It occurs at random... darn, I tried everything but the problem still exists. My vga had no problems with other games before... :<

Hi

I dont know if it is so for all of you but i think this may be so for some of you.

I have the same problem but i DO know why. I recently rebuilt my pc and i know the fan on my graphics is dead, so i have this happening with all 3D games. I have a coolermaster aerogate monitoring certain hardware and it has reported my graphics reaching 89 -90C at which point it the screen cuts out. Funnily enough at work we have just invested in wireless pinhole cameras as we have some staff theft issues and it also turns out that the wireless receiver gets extremely hot and in turn shuts down until it can cool off (was worth it though as we caught the thief redhanded).

With luck my coolermaster vga cooler will arrive today and i can then test to see that its just a heat problem.

This leads me to believe it may not be only a graphic card problem, but actually the RAM.. Try playing around with it (changing to different slots / taking out one stick and leaving one in etc.) It can be just loose, or at the end of its life - although if it only occurs with M&B, and no other graphically intense programmes, then it may be a software problem.. (what archon said basically, check if you have screensavers / power save enabled in windows, and check in bios just to be sure as well)

On a side-note, if you used to have an over-heat problem, your chip may be already physically faulty, therefore adding in a fan etc. will not help since its already mulfunctioning.. This is VERY frequently the case, BUT it would pretty much affect all high gfx applications (other 3D games with a decent gfx engine).. Hope this helps ::smile:

I finally got my vga cooler yesterday and have now fitted it. I cranked everything up battle size 40, grass, lighting etc and not once has the the screen blacked out

It says the heat was 37C but i think the sensor might be slightly out of place as this seems too low, but you never know.

Will test with a few more games later.

Thank you for all your help guys. Maybe the vga's cooler is the problem for this. I'll change it (or the vga itself) and we'll see...
