Claymore:

I'm going to have a crack at a sgian dhu next, then wrestle one of those bloody basket hilted boradswords.

well, they turned out ok
the only thing is, the textures are a bit dark, and the holes in the guard on the broadsword looks a bit wierd

The textures is from the textures I used I believe, I was going to fix that up though.
Yeah the holes do look wierd, I couldn't see any other way to do them though. That picture of the claymore isn't very good actually, it makes the blade look too short.

I'd change whatever texture you're using for the claymore's blade.

I don't know, working on a mod for sixth months begs for change.

Nice work.

9 months is a short attention span? No, believe it or not I am capable of making more than one thing at once.

Ranger - Yeah, I'm going to do that, Aqtai, they look funky I'll make one some time.

actually, I can use the dirk for PN, highland officer's carried a broadsword, dirk, sghian dhu and pistol generally.

Nooo!!  Don't go to the dark side, Hussey, there's still hope!  On the whole, painted textures blow, especially of metal.  If you need evidence look at stoned-dude's work from when he was painting textures, and from later when he started UV mapping his weapons to photographs: like night and day.  Usually if there's any problem, you can just use clone stamp tool and a small amount of painting to correct any problems with lighting, etc., in a real image.

Fair enough, I am at the monent chopping and pasting loads of different photo's to get the desired effect. The one thing I do find is that most photo's of weapons have really shoddy brass textures.

You could try a google image search for just "brass", or perhaps "brass bar" or "brass sheet".  Sometimes, especially with metals, an abstract picture of the material will work quite well for certain parts of an item.

Lochabre axes rock!
Of course these are this is all mainly 16-18th c stuff.
PM me if you need anything. I have a fairly complete listing of dimensions and weights of Highland weaponry from the national Trust of Scotland along with photos and even some radiometric studies of one claymore.

BTW, some trivia; claidheamh da' la'imh, or "clay do lave" = "two handed sword" is what the current nomenclature is for that sword.

Mar sine leat!

Tegan, I know the common look is for brass, but the harness on claymores was rarely of brass, but iron. Usually they were raw blades from Germany with the hilts added on locally.

BTW I meant to say that these look great! far beetrr than most I have seen. The quarterfoils can be rough to get looking right especially since most originals are literally just pieces of tube, very thin indeed.

Just a tip on making nice axe textures (if you have PS CS2 that is)

Make a UV map, then in Photoshop use the lasso tool to select the parts you want to have metal. 1 pice at a time (if you want 2 metal pices - like a handle and a blade only select 1). Click the channels tab and make a new alpha channel, then filter>blur>gaussian blur set the scale to about 8/9 (depending on the size of the texture), optinal add some scratces (you can use the grass brush ). Now go back to your layer and leave it selected, go filter>render>clouds and after that filter>render>lightning effects and try to find the best lightning (best to use Omni as light tipe and set the scale to metalic - tweak until you find a nice setting) and here you go, a shiny metal texture.

I only discovered this couple of days ago, but it made making textures for my weapons alot easier.

here is how I did it
