saving village from bandits

Since Ive established my independence and conquered my first town, twice now when Ive gone into villages to save the farmers against  bandits, Im in command of bunch of horsemen in a very orderly formation that do absolutely nothing when the bandits attack. nor will any formations or commands work. whats also strange is I have no horsemen in my army. I have to take on the bandits by myself with not even a farmer to help out. wtf!

I would rather consider to tell everyone to stand back and let the companions do the work. Experience effective training especially for low level companions.

I just let me companions feed of my training, the farmers are worthless they can all die Seriously though does saving the farmers give you better anything, I tested a couple of times and it seemed like it didn't matter how many of them die ?
