Saving roll/throw

Hey

Right today i was hacking away khergits (As you do) when i thought id get cocky and take them on without my horse, so i jumped off and gave a good whacking but as soon as there was more than one horse rider i got beaten very quickly.

Now i think this is a little unbalanced for gameplay, the reason being is there is no way real way to dodge horses effectivly (sure you can sidestep, but dodge two? nope). I think the way to solve this problem would be to add a saving throw button that depending on the direction you are moving jumps and avoids the horse, it wont be too unrealistic (yes i know armour is heavy and bulky but with a correct roll you could pull it off) and it would make fighting without a horse far more enjoyable.

Just my 2 pence, what do you guys think?

Yes or you should be able just to put your pike (if you own one) firmly against the ground and wait it hit the horse.

I agree with the pike idea, there should be a special stance for pikes against cavalary. It could be like holding the attack button.

Imagine a Saxon shield wall with many spears and pikes sticking out. Transforming your peasants into an penetrable defence would be awesome.

Let's hope for formations.

You must mean INpenetrable. Cause now they are very penetrable.
EDIT: Or was the post right? Can't be 100% sure cause my native language isnt English.

ilex, you're correct. A penetrable wall would be easily bypassed, while an inpenetrable wall...not so much

I'm going to take this out of context and refer to GTA3. On GTA, when a car was driving at you, you could hold jump and sideways to perform a dodge and roll. If you're lucky you could avoid the car entirely. I assume you mean the same kind of thing?

This could be governed by the agility attribute

I was thinking the same thing now that you mention it. That's a good idea, a jump or roll to dodge the horses.

You mean like a phalanx?

I don't like the ideas of jumping (Not while wearing heavy armor, anyway) but it'd be cool if you jumped to the ground and rolled under the oncoming horse (Dodging it's hooves) to stand up behind it. Heh.

I don't think you should be able to leap out of the way. If you get charged by two horses, either you're good enough to evade given a decent athletics skill, or you get knocked over. Seems balanced and makes perfect sense. Besides, if the player had this ability, then the computer would have to be able to do it as well. And let me put it this way, ever try running the computer over in halo? yeah...pain in the ass, and you end up wrecking most of the time. Although a few different moves would be nice, but only if a stamina bar is added and its not taken too far. *has terrible mental image of someone bunnyhopping down the battlefield in M&B*

I don't like getting my attacks interrupted when a horse tries to run over you at a walking speed and deals 0 damage.

In fact, I think it's extremely stupid for your attacks to get interrupted when a peasant with a butcher knife hits you for 0 damage either.

n00854180t: Walk around the impenetrable wall. No wall is good without horse flanking it...

i think for lightly armored soldiers this is a great idea. It annoys me too when i cant dive out of the way of a horse even when im naked and just carrying scimitar.

Maybe a roll left or roll right movement could be added for those who are equipped with light armor.

There should absolutely be some advantages for wearing light or no armor. Or this game too would be one of those get-the-heaviest-armor
type of power play games.

Heavy armor is meant for horse riding. If you are riding an horse and do not require much mobility (like shooting of arrows) then heavy armor would probably be best. But on foot things do change. That is why in medieval times, knights in full plates didn't want to fall of their horses...

I'd say you should still be able to do it in plate armor, just that the getting up animation should be slowed down. Historically plate armor was worn by anyone who could afford it until muskets became common.

PS: Falling off a horse would hurt a lot. Thats the main reason people didn't want to do it.

Jumping and rolling in a swordfight, wearing armor, seems like a nonsense to me, not fitting well to the style of the game.

For authenticities sake, I'd say balance it with what a human being of moderate physical fitness could do.

I don't want to get into a war over what a 3 athletics means, but let's for metaphores sake say it equals that of a football playing lineman.

If you've ever played football you've got around 20lbs of pads on you and it slows you down a bit, but not much.

padded armour and leather boots and a padded helm is about 20-30 or so pounds i'd say.

to me if you're running around in 20-30 lbs of armour with a athletics of 3 you should be able to perform a roll to dodge. say 10lbs per ath. point.

with a athletics of 4 40lbs, ath of 5 50lbs.

That is a balanced compromise.

No one in their right mind can do a forward roll in full plate. Your running at least 90lbs of armour with everything included if not more. That to me is simply pushing the bounderies.

Now maybe you want to throw in a agility factor as well. max weight in armour is 1/3(agi) x 10lbs restricted by athletics as well. So you'd have to meet both.

I think that athletics is already determined by str.

Both the str and the agi would need to be there to pull it off.

It is not just heavy armor, it is also the not so much reflexible joints. They can bend, but rolling would be impossible or so would be running in platemail.
