Savegames are Mod specific yet all compiled into one file?

Users who are viewing this thread

Recently I started playing this game again (and props to all the improvements by the way, the game has a lot more depth these days!) and I played it for a while, got to about day 270 in native before I decided to look around for mods. I found Native Expansion and was quite impressed, so I installed that. Unfortunately I installed it incorrectly, overwriting the native folder instead of making it its own separate module. That wasn't exactly that big of an issue though, because I played Native Expansion for quite some time before I even realized it (and backed up my native folder before I installed it anyway)

However when I realized I had installed it incorrectly, I deleted my native folder, re-extracted both native and native expansion into separate folders and now they should both work perfectly. However when I go into my Native game I see both of my save games (for Native and for Native Expansion). When I go into Native Expansion there is no savegame.

Is there not a way to decompile the .sav file in Mount&Blade\Savegames\Native then recompile it elsewhere so I can run it in the seperate mod? I don't even need to separate the file itself, I just need both mods to be able to access it.

It's a real pity that the save games aren't mod specific as that way I could just copy it from Native to Native expansion then delete my Native savegame within Native expansion, and vice versa.

Saved games are very much mod specific. If you install 6 different mods correctly and then view the My Documents\Mount&Blade Savegames\ ... folder you'll see a separate folder for each mod. Inside those are separate game saves.

There would be no way to compile saved games from all mods into one file because they all contain vastly different game setting information. That's why when the game or a mod updates, it likely wont allow saved game compatibility. Because you installed Expansion wrong, is why the two saved folders essentially merged is my thought. But you shouldn't be able to pull that apart to function for both version (Native and Native Expansion).

So...

Is there not a way to decompile the .sav file in Mount&Blade\Savegames\Native then recompile it elsewhere so I can run it in the seperate mod?

... I don't see that being possible at all. You can decompile a saved game and get some information from it. But I don't see how you could use it for another mod. Someone else can come in here and say for sure if there's a way, but it's my understanding that what you want is not at all possible.

Well yes, they are mod specific to an extent. But it's just done really poorly...

I have two save games in Native, two in Custom Settlements and another test save in Native Expansion now and where are they all stored? All in one file from what I can tell. So whilst within that file they are mod specific it's impossible to actually take one save game from one folder for Native for instance and put it in Custom Settlements or another mod... it just seems like a strange way to do things.

I actually thought I might have solved my problem after looking at your reply, because savegames are currently put into Mount&Blade\Savegames\Native i figured maybe if i made a folder called Mount&Blade\Savegames\Native Expansion and then put the save file from the Native folder into the new one that it would give me the same list of savegames... but no! All mods access their savegames from that one file within the Native folder... in that regard they aren't "mod specific" at all.

Quite frustrating.

[EDIT] Oh by the way, does anyone know of any programs that I could use to open the .sav file and edit the information? I'm going by the assumption that when you save a game in a mod (Native or otherwise) it specifies a mod name for that specific save file to only display itself within that mod. Therefore if i could go into the file, change the name of the mod for my Native expansion save file to Native expansion rather than it's current "Native" name the problem should be fixed quite easily.

I did do a search for any tools to edit save games but didn't come up with anything substantial.

I guess I don't seem to understand what you mean. You say...

But that's not the case for me. Every saved game I have falls into the My Documents\Mount&Blade Savegames\ folder. For example, I have Hundred Years War folder there with 6 .sav files for the 6 saved games I have. Then 2 or 3, for another, 2 for another, and so on. None of my saved games overlap or combine for multiple mods.

As for...

Saved games aren't put in that path. Not for my retail version or my Steam version. ALL saved games go to My Documents\Mount&Blade Savegames\ If you have a folder "Savegames" then something is wrong. The correct path would be "Mount&Blade Savegames" no slash. It's also under My Documents, not Program Files\Mount&Blade as you described.

So I don't know if you did something silly and it's installed incorrectly or if we're just not on the same pathway you and I. But savegames should be in:

My Documents\Mount&Blade Savegames\

Inside that folder will be folders for each of the mods...

\Native
\Hundred Years War
\Etc
\Etc

In each of those will be the savegames for the mods.

One of the mods or admins here can tell you for sure, but I'm almost positive you're not able to physically open a .sav file and edit its content. Only the program that created the save should be able to do that.

Oh I see. I feel foolish - they are in fact all stored in My Documents. I do wonder what the file in Mount&Blade\Savegames\Native is supposed to do then. No matter, I fixed the problem, thanks for your help!
