Hey guys,

Did anyone else take the SAT today. It was the national day for U.S. I thought it was pretty easy.

Cheers!

I believe it's known as the standard apptitude test, thats rated nationally. Based off of the results, it seems that they influence what post secondary institutions are open to them. My only knowlege is from that one episode of Mission Hill though

What is this SAT? I always here about it when watching American High-School movies (yes, it's almost a genre in itself  )

In the UK, SATs are Standard Assessment Tests designed to give an indication of a child's knowledge and intelligence at a given age, compared to other children of that age. IIRC, they're done at around 7 yrs, 10 yrs and 13 yrs, with the latter being used to gauge which set a child will be placed in for GSCEs.

I'm not sure if they're the same as SAT in the US, and I think the US places more significance on their SAT than we do on our SATS. Nobody here ever wants to know your SAT scores.

SAT does not stand for anything anymore. It is not an aptitude test at all, which is why the original name, Scholastic Aptitude Test, was dropped after briefly being sanitized to Scholastic Achievement Test (which is also off base, though it seems less offensive).

//EDIT: Also, SAT scores are very important in the U.S. because school grade inflation and variation in school behaviour make looking at a high school GPA almost useless.

I don't know if the Obama story is true. But the SAT was a very different test when he took it compared to what it is now. Back then it was considered an intelligence test (supposedly you couldn't really study for it, blah blah). The scoring back then was also harder. A perfect score isn't that uncommon now, but back then it was pretty rare.

Well there is SAT and... uh, does anyone remember the other... Oh! ACT.

ACT, I think other states have a different one. The difference being something like, how they test you, ACT strictly from a memorization standpoint and SAT from a critical thinking standpoint. Hell I may be completely wrong, was like 5 years ago that I took the damn thing.

What do you mean? It is a big deal to colleges.

Really? My SAT scores were mediocre, but I got into a fairly good college.

First, mediocre is a relative term. Second, fairly good is a relative term. Third, nobody said it was the only thing considered.

Padding yourself out with extracurricular activities is what gets you into the best colleges these days. I had excellent SAT scores, but got turned down for several very good colleges because I didn't give a **** about high school life.

I haven't taken it yet, but I took it back in 7th grade (when I was 12) as part of a program for Duke.  I scored a 1600/2400 when you add the three categories together.  I thought I did horrible, but then I found at the average Junior makes little better then I did.  Kinda pathetic.

EDIT
Oh yeah, I got a medal, too

No one gives a damn about the writing one.

SATs are used as a reference for test taking scores by universities and are factored in applications. They have a Reading and a Math Section. Technically they have a writing section too but no one gives a damn about it. There are optional programs like the Deyshawn mentioned to take a practice SAT in 7th grade for kids ages 12-13 and also to take an National PSAT at Grade 10 (15-16) and normal SATs are taken in Grade 11 and 12 ages 16-18.

I did the worst on the writing portion, I scored better on the math and reading sections.  Someone's cranky today.  Stayed up past your bed time?

You, uh, do realize a 2400 is a perfect score?

He only got 66%.

That's pretty sucky, IMO. (Nevermind that he was twelve)

Oh, I misunderstood his post. I'm used to seeing "1600/2400" mean, "I got 1600 from the Math and Reading section combined, 2400 if you count the Writing section".
