[The Mercenary]

It is the year 1191. Pope Gregory VIII has declared the fall of Jerusalem to be a sign, a punishment of all Christians throughout Europe for their sins. The word Crusade rings out from the lowest slums to the highest king's halls. Freidrich Barbarossa has taken the cross, as has the Lionheart of England and Philip II of France. Soldiers muster throughout the known world, the knights of France, the bowmen of Wales, the men-at-arms of England, the massive armies of the Holy Roman Empire, Swabia, Austria. The crusading orders have risen above the rest with religious zeal, the Order of the Temple joining with the Hospital and the Teutonic Knights to reclaim the Holy Land. There, atop a dune, stands the shining city of Jerusalem, taken by the Arabic leader Salah-ad-din, described as the very devil himself by the many scholars of Europe. In the way, the city of Acre. You have been mustered by the crusader king Richard I, the Lionheart, and have already joined his army. Thousands of soldiers march with you, and the emblem of the King shines above the steel of the knights, the lion of the ferocious Lionheart, your figurehead, the white background and red cross of the Knights Templar, and the black background and white cross of the Knights Hospitaller. The bloodstained sands of Arabia, marred by a millennium of war, awaits.

This is for the people who want a medieval RP. I will probably not be in this, and I doubt this will even kick off, but if it does, knock yourselves out. If I bother being in this, it'll mostly be just for direction so you lot don't wander off east and end up in Mongolia or Siberia or something like that. I'll be assigning weapons and rank to whoever chooses to do this, depending on how many do it. After that, you're free to do whatever you want as long as you stay with the army. I reserve the right to kick idiots out.

I don't care, and I'll be playing one if I join in sometime. Also, most people over the age of 30 would be too old to fight, and younger than 15 would be too young to fight.

I'm taking it upon myself to protect this thread from perthy.

On topic, my knowledge of this period isnt great but I know a bit about 1400 england so I'll write a bio of an English man-at-arms. Just checking one thing; men-at-arms where basically knights without the land and titles in the aristocracy, right? Same training and gear that was only a lil' less expensive?


Note: In 1191, I believe they would be called sergeants. If I recall, a mounted sergeant was considered 'half'* of a knight, a dismounted sergeant was considered half of a mounted sergeant, and other troops were considered half of dismounted sergeants. It goes further than that, but I don't recall what other troop distinctions were.

*Reflects amount of pay also.

Name: Leinad Luther

Age: 24

Sex: Male

Appearance: 6ft precisely. Dark blonde hair, green eyes and medium build. Handsome young man but notably a decent portion of flesh missing from the right side of his face where a peasent's spear smashed through his helmet when he was surpressing a revolt in Wale's under the leadership of a whelp upstart.
Wears a rare silk shirt, a long-sleeved mail shirt and an sleeve-less iron breast plate, along with leather trews covered in mail down to a pair of good leather boots. Sits astride a black and white patched gelding.

History: Served in the King's army since he could buckle a saddle, serving which ever page or knight or sergeant needed the extra hands. Born as the son of a mounted sergeant, he boasts that he can trace his lineage back to the Saxons, but this is most likely as accurate as a drunk Frenchman's crossbow. Having ransomed one of the French minor nobility, Leinda found himself in wealth and spent the money on good armour, two horses and a small plot of land for himself to farm if he should ever retire. Joined the crusades because, even being one of the many fighting men in England, he worries about his immortal soul and so believes this his way to a good afterlife.

Background: Could have madea a good, honest farmer but his ability with a shortened lance and poleaxe, sword and general success as a brawler destiend him otherwise. A good, brutally honest man, but all to ready to rip someones throat out for a "good" cause. Serves as a mounted and dismounted man-at-arms to whichever lord the king lends him to in the battle line.

History: don't really know what you mean by history. to me it seems like its the same thing as background.
Background: formerly a blacksmith but once the crusades started, he signed up. after training in the woods with a famous trainer of arms, he marched under the flag of Antioch even though he was English.

Name: Sir Joseph Artorious O'Keenan

Appearance: Dark blond hair, greenish blue eyes, Caucasian, 6'2 tall. Wears mail under a surcoat displaying his heraldry.

History: His early childhood was spent being a page to a Hospitaller knight in Holland. He continued his training and became a squire, and then until He was knighted at 16, whence He earned his sword & mail. Joseph hired out as a mercenary knight for the next five years after his knighting, and at age 21 was brought into the service of an impoverished English Templar lord. In the next year He helped his master gain back his honor and his wealth, Joseph rose high in the esteem of this man, and when the news came of the Third Crusade, He and his Lord set out for the holy land, to join King Richard the Lionheart in his conquest. Joseph fought in The King's army for the Island of Cyprus, and in 1191 they took it from the Byzantines. Soon afterward, the call for the siege of Jerusalem, but the city of Acre stands in his path.

Backround: Joseph's father was a Scottish knight of renown, whom married a German lady-in-waiting.
Joseph was sent at five to a knight his mother's family knew in Holland.

History: John grew up in York, His family was poor and they barely managed to get by without sending their youngest children to beg or steal. John started working at 13 as a stable Boy for a Wealthy Noble, who then Allowed John and his family to live and work on the Nobles Land or in His Great House. When John turned 19 the Noble forced him and his Father to join the Kings army.

Background: Has lived in and around York all his Childhood, Has 3 Brothers and 1 Sister. His Father used to be a Guard at York Castle

History: born in New York in the year 2142, George Morrison was the son of a dark matter miner father and a war productions factory mother. he grew up in a good neighboorhood and was givin a good education and space school. he worked as a time agent and would travel time to either save or kill people that weren't supposed to live or die. now his current mission is in the time of the crusades. since the daio is broken, he doesn't know who his current objective is but he will eventually identify him by the blue or red aurora around him.
Background: no siblings, lived in New York City and Larchmont.

Appearance: Short blonde hair, with dark green eyes. She's a slender woman, but has obvious muscles. She looks more at home in a suit of chainmail than she does in a court dress. Faint scars are visible across her body, white lines that look like the kind that develops from a wound from a bladed weapon.

Background: Born to a lower noble's family, she was taken in by the Temple and spent the next fifteen years away from home. She was knighted several months ago and joins Richard the Lionheart on his Crusade.
