"I ask you to pass legislation to prohibit the most egregious abuses of medical research; creating human-animal hybrids." - George W. Bush, 2006 State of the Union Address

I remember hearing that and having a good laugh back then!

They do exist, you know. We've got mice that can grow human ears.

Oh, believe me, I know.

Not actual human tissue. It's more of a cow-mouse hybrid than anything. I do love where the research that allowed that is going though. In 10-15 years maybe, I can just grow a new liver when it's completely destroyed by all the alcohol I consume.

we have that tech now, Tib. Well, not the liver exactly, but we're growing ears, working on bladders, and grew a piece of liver tissue.

Yay for more Livers!

Actually a couple years ago a bladder was grown for a girl who needed the transplant. As far as I know it was successful. We've also been successfully growing heart valves as well. The technology isn't advanced enough yet to grow livers as far as I know, it'll be some years yet. The reason is that the liver is considerably more complex than a bladder.

Zhirinovsky seems like my kind of guy.
I liked the bit where he implied how insignificant Georgia is compared to the "4 capitals."

Last part was a bit overkill though.

I recall I saw a TV episode of this once, the process is deceptively simple. In brief, all they do is take cells from the person's blood, distill it to get the stuff they want like any other procedure, and then simply put them onto culture covered pig heart valves and let the cells multiply on top of that. Apparently, all you need to do to make come cells grow a certain way is to simulate the movements the part they are associated with moves. When the pig's structural valve is made to mimic pumping of fluids, the human cells are then manipulated into taking up the structure of a heart valve.

That being said, I don't think this procedure involves any sort of heavy handed genetic modification between two species (not that I'm against it), but merely the manipulation of cells to make them grow a certain way. Of course, I have no authority on this issue, there may be other methods of doing this that do involve crossing two sets of genes that 'm aware of.

AFAIK there are two methods of growing organs:

1) Use adult stem cells (I think?) by stimulating them to specialize.

2) Clone them.

From what I understand of this method, they use cells from the organ they are attempting to grow and use some type of biodegradable polymer framework for them to grow around. For instance, the earmouse only used cartilage cells from a cow to grow the ear like structure.

This guy talks about it, calls it tissue engineering or organ printing.

This guy and his party are a joke nobody take serious.  Only foreigners because they are only one that listen.  Maybe 5% of Russians loyal to his party, seats in duma come from districts in villages where party member is popular person in village.  This man an party are not to be taken seriously.  Only people that do are foreigners who seem to think he is important.

You Russians scare us cause we never know WHAT your thinking  haha

One minute it's "Ah! My friend! I bring vodka!"

The next its: "I KEEL YOU!"

Vodka is for gopniks and village peoples, we really drink cognac

That is bollocks, everyone in Leningrad drinks vodka, and I consider it the best city in all of Russia, of all time.
