[S] Historic Castles Project - the British Isles [Released for Warband]

I've already shrunk down several of the castles
I don't mind empty space since all the fighting takes place on 10-20 square metres.
You won't wander around for minutes doing nothing like in some RPG games.
It looks impressive when the castle is close to real size - and it doesn't affect performance so far (at least not on my mediocre machine).

And what about when you end up making 300 British castles?
I doubt that'll happen ,
but for the time being I'll focus on Britain because I know the history well.

Wow, great work Adorno! Hard to believe that you only used native parts and pieces in those castles.  Any plans on doing some walled cities or villages?

Thanks. Villages are not much fun. Even though there are battles taking place fortifications won't be used by the AI, so...
But right now I'm working on a simple circular Anglo-Saxon burh - which is basically a fortified village (Idibil was kind enough to provide some info).

Cities must wait, not sure if I'll do any.

Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland.
It's not of much historical importance but damn it look's cool.

Looks very nice. Also, I'd say it's from the XI-XIIth Centuries, because of the square towers and the disposition. Is it so?

Awesome work. It made me shed a tear for good old Lords of the Realm. You could look there for more reference if you didn't already.

Sorry for being pesky about it, but maybe (just maybe) you can feel somehow inclined to make the great castle in the Holy LAnd: the Krak des Chevaliers

Comparison between the Krak and Chateau-Gaillard:

I won't bother anymore. Take care, and keep up the great job!

A Teutonic Castle - they're popular

... the great castle in the Holy Land: the Krak des Chevaliers
I know someone who said he would take a 'krak' at making it

I recently made an Anglo-Saxon town. It falls out of the timeframe of this project though,
but Idibil will use it in his Brytenwalda mod:

It looks like this:

(My flora lights up in a weird way)

Defending it:

Defenders sallying out spawn inside the town and rush out of the gate:

Life_Erikson 说:
No. A righthander which is attacking (going upstairs) has a disatvantage because he can not use his swordarm good. This is the reason, why attackers have often sold left handed mercenaries.

For the defenders (the guys who run downstairs to defeat the castle) are the circled stairs an advantage (becaus for righthanded enemies they are not). But if a defender is lefthanded he has got an disatvantage. (same reason as righthanded attacker)
Sorry for the late reply...

Yeah, I missed that fact. But if an attacker is left-handed he has to be a really good fencer because he can't use his shield properly.

Adorno: Keep the stuff coming!

you have to be joking about it's historical importance

there has been a castle/fortification there for around 1500 years and it may even have been the capital of the North Eastern Britons

there have been archaeological digs at Bamburgh since the 1960s and one of the best examples of a pattern welded sword was found there, amongst other important finds.

William II besieged Bamburgh in 1095 but was unsuccessful but in 1464 it became the first British castle to be defeated by artillery.

edit to add that that Anglo Saxon town looks amazing

Errr..yes, yes it is heh. Cool knowledge

To Urlik. I meant if we are talking about warfare really.
North-East England in general has alot of Castles that have seen much more history but none are so imposing. Which is why I chose it. For example Norham Castle right on the border was more or less under constant siege.

Yes there was a fort there for a very long time though it was Celtic/Roman and called Din Guardi. Said to be Lancelot's Home, aswell as the legends of King Arthur being buried around there along with alot of other mysticism.

It did'nt get much action untill the 13-14th centuries where it got alot of Scottish sieges. It never broke untill the Cannon was invented then, like for alot of other castles. It was over for Bamburgh.

Balan Le Savage (from Arthurian Legend) would probably have had a connection to Bamburgh as he was said to have come from Northumberland as well

There was quite a few legends about Arthur in Northumberland tbh. Mostly they go like
"Shepard finds hole in ground, follows it untill grand hall"
"Choice between Horn and a Sword"
"He picks the wrong one, and a booming voice utters some witty line about his disposition"
"He's kicked out and can't find the place again no matter how hard he looks"

There is a legend like this at Dustanburgh Castle and the village of Haltwhistle. However I'm hijacking the thread  I know too much.

How about Conwy Castle?
You said it. Thanks for the info.

Let me present: Conwy Castle. Like Beaumaris it's Walesian and was built during the reign of Edward I,
and also designed by his master castle builder James of St. George.
I know it looks huge, that's because it is. Some might like it, others will find it appalling

Name: Conwy Castle

History: http://www.castlewales.com/conwy.html (with nice pictures)

Year: 1287

Besiegers spawn - to the left:

A siege. There are two ladders (one has been pushed down by defenders) but AI will only use the closest one unless ordered otherwise.

A theater nearby:

Life's but a walking shadow,
a poor player that struts and frets
his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more...

Great, thanks Pinky - a really good model. I've been looking at Warwick actually.

Forgot to show defenders sally out - from inside the 'antrum' (Conwy castle).
