Canister shot would be nice since, now that artillery crews are mobile, they are much easier targets. Cavalry and Infantry instantly see canon crews and think "easy kills 
". Canister shot could turn the tide of this thinking and would make for an even more awesome Mount and Musket experience.
Possible suggestion on how to achieve this:
The hammer the Artillery crews currently carry around is a green box with the standard ball. It might be possible to use "X" as a way to switch between a hammer that makes a canon ball crate and a hammer that makes a canister shot crate. You could also make crates differently colors so arty crew don't get confused such as keeping the green for balls and maybe brown for canister... just an idea
