Rome II: Total War

I dunno, I've gotten to full map completion of 3 nomad campaigns this way. What makes it fun for me is being able to fly around the map faster than anyone else, committing mass genocide and sacking/razing cities until the entire middle east is nothing but slums. In Rome 1 it's even more fun because you can kill literally a million people once you get to Italy.

jeq'uhb khan comforned genocidal mongolaboo

Are we just tacking -boo to everyone unhealthily obsessed with something like a nerd version of that scandalgate cliche?

its also a cancerous way to play the game. you will quit the campaign before you've gotten to your twentieth battle out of boredom, this I vow
It sounds like something I for one would quit doing during the first battle.

I just don't get it, from the dossier I've gathered jacob is able to sit in place "13 hours" doing nothing so he may be an anomaly "the One" you might say who is able to do the exact same thing every battle (in reference to the variety of playstyles available to the nomad factions ). You could say the same about being the Romans but I mean, not really. There's something to be said about the units horribly fighting each other in good ole infantry melee.

While I think melee combat in Rome II is the best it's ever been in total war, I am put to sleep by the idea of recruiting the strongest armoured swordsmen and powering your way to victory. Even as Rome I barely recruit any super heavy infantry, deliberately put off the marian reforms, and use hastati like javelin-throwing guerillas. My favourite faction in the entire total war series is Parthia in Rome II. Their armies are full of specialised garbage and their success is entirely dependent on how good you are at skirmish tactics.

God, no wonder you're a Mongol-apologist.

how can you even effectively use hastati as skirmishers?  :ohdear:

Same way you use velites. Get them behind an engaged unit or just park them in front of pikes or elephants and blow your load.

aren't horse archer factions universally deemed to be easiest? Or was it because all people I know spent their years finishing turks campaign at m2tw again and again

In medieval 2 they are easy because:
--The AI is beyond stupid and often doesn't count horse archers as enemies, meaning they sometimes don't chase you.
--Heavy cavalry is so difficult to manoeuvre that it can rarely react quickly, even if you stand really close to them.
--The Turks start surrounded by rebels and never have to worry about anything.

In Rome II they are pretty hard because they have a horrible economy, and in Rome I they are hard because stonewall offensive sieges are nearly impossible.

Parthia is my favorite, too. So many of their units are terrible, but somehow it can work! "Somehow" meaning "because the AI is retarded."

Just in case some people are interested, there's a Russian made Bronze Age mod for Rome Total War 1. http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?371693-Bronze-Age-Total-War-(Preview-amp-download)/page27

Get the mod and the translation from LanPirot's posts. It's not 100% translated, but it's playable enough that you can generally know what you're doing. And in case anyone is worried, I scanned the mod installer with Malwarebytes, and there's no viruses or anything that turns your machine into a bitcoin miner.

I'm always almost clicking to play this game again. But I can't be bothered to find the best mods to make it playable.

I essentially need compatible mods that make the game 2-4 turns per year, with ye olde family tree, An AI Rome that doesn't die in the first 20 turns so I can fight it or endure it. Tired of being a barbarian fighting a mirror all the time.

Play the Imperator Augustus campaign if you want to fight Romans. The ones right on the border can be quite fun. Building up momentum while dodging occasional roman excursions feels authentic enough for me to enjoy it as an early migration period type campaign

Also you're not going to get a family tree in this game. The best you can ask for is a mod which allows infinite generals and armies.

Could you link to the mods you're running?

In Order Of Importance:

No. Bloody. Agents.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=354928507

No hidden income, 4 parts. Part 4 makes the capitiol buildings have much more wealth, so I usually omit it.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=312898564
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=315874913
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=323501036
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=323501085

No stinkin' forced march. You'll find yourself in far fewer annoyong situations where the AI is just outside your reach raiding and then runs away on the end turn.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=484046657

(Essentially) Infinite armies and navies. One thing I like doing is having a single guy in every province to act like a governor.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=390905782

Universal diplomacy. Allows you to sack settlements as any faction, form confederacies as anyone except rome, and create either satrapies or client states (defaults to satrapies when subjugating)
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=420324913

Loose formation for every unit.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=186915422

Factions die within 1 turn of not having a settlement (prevents eternal navies).
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=255866286

No magical/illogical abilities like flaming javelins, headhunt, frenzied charge, use the whip, rapid advance etc. They're a detriment to the AI who uses them too often and tired out their units, and they clutter up the UI with silly cookie clicker abilities which don't add anything to the gameplay experience. They removed most of them in emperor edition but they should have gone the whole way.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=390397610

Every faction gets auxilia.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=355233779

More satrap/client state levies. Useful for the seleucids and makes subjugation essential if you have a poor roster.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=339408767

Persian unit mod to diversify the Iranian satraps.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=290794598

Steppe mod, does the same for nomads.
