I wish IVAN wasn't abandoned. It would have been the best roguelike in the history of ever.

It's good, but not as good as DF. If only DF (already) supported a similar multi-layer tile system..

OK for the sake of all us idiots reading this im going to put my self out there. What is a "roguelike"? Please explain. Thanks

I've been into various ones in the past. I mostly was into Zangband, variants of it, and other Angband offshoots. I have however played ADOM, IVAN, Unreal World, Dungeon Crawl, and TOME out of that list.
The only thing remotely roguelike I've played recently is Dwarf Fortress though.

I don't know if my experience with Dwarf Fortress can be described as fun. More like an inability to stop playing out of sheer stubbornness.  That game is damn complicated.

Stone Soup is the only Roguelike I could get into. It's not as insanely complex as most others. And because I could play a troll berserker of Trog.

If you do like insanely complex roguelikes then check out Ragnarok: http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?gameid=1399

It's not so complicated once you learn the basics, for Fortress mode at least. All the commands are always on the screen. That alone makes it easier than roguelikes.

Yep. Though I was distracted by the command list. Some of the commands required some programming skills, I guess.

You see if I played that, the first and only thing I'd do is hit the button labeled "Panic". I can't seem to get into roguelikes, I just do not have the memory to handle all the stuff they throw at you.

I can't get enough of NetHack, no matter how many times I die. Dwarf fortress adventuring is also made of win.
As for the others:

Angband: My first roguelike.
ZAngband: Played it quite a bit, although didn't get too far. Good magic system.
ADOM: Didn't get too far on this one either.
ToME: Played it, but preferred ZAngband.
DoomRL: I died far too much

Out of all those, ADOM delivers for me.. or used to, as just a few months agou, after 8 years of playing, I decided I was finally fed up with it. Now just gonna wait for its author to finish his other brainchild: JADE.

Somehow it has the most intuitive controls and design, or mayby they just 'work' for me.

I tried Dwarf Frotress, and tbh it confuses me - just to much of the stuff to process. There are tilesets out there, so it might ease the learning curve a bit, perhaps someone would recommend one?

Same here. Besides, even though Im and old school gamer, I have my limits, I just can't play an ASCII game.

I must say, out of that list the Unreal World is a favourite. If you are into less fanciful ones then go ahead and download the free version! All you are missing if you get that version are a few starting scenarios. And the game has some decent graphics for those of you who cannot stomach ASCII

I have tried to get into the Fortress mode of DF, but that turns out into way too much micromanaging for me to stomach so I tend to **** around in the adventure mode from time to time. Personally, in my opinion, the biggest draw of DF is the legends mode. Just reading through that section and seeing some of the crazy **** that happened is entertaining.

Dwarf Fortress is so far the only "rogue like" (if you can call it that) that Ive ever got into, but I've always been more of a strategy fan anyways.

Dystopian Rhetoric. There's a DF that already has it installed here: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=62 If you download that you won't have to do anything else to play with the tileset.
Follow this guide to get started: http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Your_first_fortress

Sticky this, please. And Doom RL is damned fun, more fun than Doom, dare I say.
Diablo RL is redundant, however. In my opinion, Diablo already is a roguelike, with graphics.
