Riots in Birmingham

How annoying, people who saw a couple of passers by gettting roughly treated by the police are now raving about how badly the police handled the situation...

It's nice to see how mature people can be, considering the needs of a police operation as a whole as opposed to what they see as individuals.

Got caught up in some riots in Birmingham city centre just an hour or two ago. The whole city centre was blocked off by riot squads.

From what I gathered from a policeman an anti muslim extremist protest got into a fight with some muslims, and things escalated from there.

The police were generally really great and polite, although we did have to run like hell at one point when they started advancing up a street in formation. Pretty impressive to see that kind of thing.

Still, I don't think I saw history in the making or anything, just pretty scary to be in the middle of it all.

(and here's the BBC news link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/west_midlands/8191833.stm)

come visit me in 1 May if you want to see some police action with tear gas, beating, lots of running and throwing
stones.

anarchy ftw

I don't think they had to go that extreme. The worst they did was whack some passers by with their shields.

As for Birmingham Alabama, it's the bane of people looking for tickets on google

Yeah because I'd want to be strolling along casually to be suddenly beaten by police, unwilling to notice I'm not putting up any fight and requesting that they stop. Because deep down I'd know "hey, at least the rest of the operation could be going down okay, who the **** cares if I'm getting some boot? I wonder what I'll have for tea tonight, most of my teeth will be gone so maybe soup...".

It's not like the police killed anyone with their complete **** bully tactics recently! OH WAI-

The worst that happened in Brum was that they pushed a couple of people over. Hell, they didn't even use their batons, they hit them with their shields.

Granted the police often go overboard, but they also have to respond to general orders, which can't always distinguish between peaceful passers-by and rioters. If a policeman has an order to clear a street or pacify anyone not moving, they have to carry it out, they can't make exceptions. Maybe you think they should be allowed to take their own initiative, but then they're weakening their main advantage; that they act as an organised force where the mob don't.

How is pushing over people innocently walking around pacifying the situation? If anything it's pissing more people off.

You can tell who the rioters are because... they're kind of rioting.

If only it where so easy.

Well done, you ignored what I just said

I've been hit by the stream of a fire hose. It's not as fun on that side.

You know, if you look at my picture, and then picture (or make via photoshop) the 'water' red, then the picture is so much more awesome. Lasers for suppression FTW!

Of course they can, they're not purging the ****ing place, they're pacifying a riot. Why do you think they get in trouble for attacking innocent people by the Independent Commission? Because it's not what they're supposed to do...

They wouldn't have attacked innocent people. Police work routines would have made sure that the people were given a clear warning to leave the street, if they want to stay there then I myself would push the dumb ****ers over. Most newspapers blow everything out of proportion.

"WE WANTZ POLICE TO BE HARDER ON CRIMINALS! OH WAIT, THEYS PUSHED SOMEONE OVER. POLICE OPRESSION!!1!"

In a riot situation, you don't want to split up and try and judge everyone's reason for being there, it's best to stay together, and disperse the crowd.

Exactly. It's like this guy who was complaining that they refused to go down the road to help someone getting beat up.

The police in question were holding a cordon. To break off even three or four to help one individual could potentially endanger a much larger number of people by leaving the cordon weakened!

The police can't discriminate in the moment, they don't have the time.

Being caught up in a football riot in a street in Huddersfield I know it's not a case of "you got yourself into it", suddenly everyone's shouting and punching and the police are running around. Luckily my police were mint and just hauled me out of there instead of shoving me over. What does that even accomplish?
Being that it's not a case of "they were stupid to be there", it can just suddenly ignite and people panic and have no idea what to do, a police man running up and shoving you over doesn't exactly help matters.

And the police have a duty of care to the man being beat up, the police stood watching could get into serious trouble for simply standing by, it's lucky for them that the man wasn't beaten to death.

Basically this comes at a very bad time for when the police are still getting shafted for the handling of the G20 and the Environmental protests, and I agree they should, they really need to sort out their tactics. Whacking people who are clearly not doing anything in the face with a shield isn't cricket.
