Rigging body armour bones

So I exported full_plate_armor with OpenBRF to SMD, stole its skeleton and rigged it to my own armour in Blender. One tiny problem: When importing to OpenBRF it gives me a warning that I've used 6 bones, but M&B uses 4. So which bones does M&B actually use?

EDIT: never mind, I didn't read it properly. Or think it through. I'm tired. It's complaining I have verts rigged to 6 bones, whereas the limit is 4.

Blender has an operator in Weight Paint mode exactly for that:

Before that I had to use an addon for this very same task.

Insted rigging it with blender you could try importing it as a static mesh, and then use openbrf "copy rigging" function.
