I may be a bit biased on this because I'm currently riding an Aserai horse with half scale barding and around 140 riding skill. With this configuration my horse is absurdly fast but is quite lacking in terms of maneuverability. My horse can accelerate in a brief second and has a top speed that should belong to a motorcycle, not a horse, however it takes forever to turn around to come around for my second pass.
I haven't rode a horse in over 20 years so I don't know what would be accurate but I know that current speed boost from riding skill makes the Aserai horse ludicrously fast, no matter how much armor you or the horse is wearing. I'm also pretty sure that the skill of the rider would have more influence on how well the horse responds to commands thus making the horse more agile.
I'm not sure if the horse collision physics are largely incomplete but right now it does feel incomplete. I'm pretty sure that in Warband the enemy troops had a lot more "mass" and trampling them would slow me down a lot more, even without being stopped by enemy spears. Right now when I pass through friendly troops I feel like a ghost without a hitbox because I just float throught them. There is a mod to improve this but it does slow down the performance a bit, so I'm guessing this is why this feature in incomplete.
However when I pass through enemy troops I also feel like a ghost that deal tiny little blows as I pass through the enemy formations. No matter how many enemy soldiers are clumped together I can pass through them efforlessely but with little consequence to the troops or myself. 99% of the time the spearmen will be focused on anything other than myself so I can keep on running through enemy formations all day.
One of the reasons this is so inconsequential is because the charge damage is so low. I usually only deal 1 or 2 damage (sometimes up to 5 damage) to enemy troops and I can't even tell if I'm knocking them down most of the time. I know the Aserai horse is real lightweight in terms of charge damage but no horse should be able to plow through tight enemy formations at 70kmh and barely cause a few bruises. Horse armor should add to charge damage, because the added weight and protection would certainly allow the horses to hit the enemy troops harder without hurting themselves.
