In a battle, evading obstacles should be a higher priority for riders than hitting their enemy. Stopping in the midst of battle means a quick death for a rider.
Similarly, riders should not stop immediately after charging through the enemy group (unless there's only one or two enemies left). Riding a few dozen yards further before turning back for another charge greatly increases survival rate.
Lance-armed riders should never get into a close fight with footmen... at least not so often as they do now.
If a rider has a choice between a lance and a smaller weapon, he should choose the latter on closed terrain maps.
