[Research] Odrysian Kingdom (Thracian Union)

Users who are viewing this thread

The Odrysian Kingdom was the first of many Thracian Unions, and consisted of most of what is now Bulgaria, from the Black Sea, to the Danube. It encompassed many tribes such as the Odrysian's (go figure) the Getae, and other various independent Thracian Tribes. They combined Hellenistic and "barbarian" warfare together, using the phalanx, but also using heavy and light infantry. They were well known for their cavalry power, as well.

Thracians, if I read right atleast, used archers from thier german alies. and the Cavalry were mostly Sarmatian alies/mercenaries.

and the Infantry you are showing. the ones with hats(if I am right) are nobles.
Cool Pictures though.

Those officers, dont look like dacian/thracians to me.
the first one is wearing an Ilyian helmet. the 2nd one looks more like a celt to me.

But I could be wrong,

The Thracians had no set military dress codes. What you could buy or loot is what you had.

They're both Dacians (the first pic is even from a Romanian source).
And it's the first time I hear of Germanic allies of the Thracians. Celts - yes, after the Celtic invasion of the Balkans, the two people mixed to some degree. But Germanics - only a few tribes among the Dacians in modern Romania, eventually.
And the Thracians and Dacians had no particular need for "Sarmatian" auxiliaries - they were renowned for their cavalry traditions ever since the times of the chariot (see the Illiad and the Odyssey), especially for their nobility. They even occasionally provided light cavalry troops to their Greek allies. And the Getai were almost a Thraco-Scythian mix, since they were all horse archers, according to Ovid.

Though I agree that, at least among the Thracians (i.e. the more "civilized" and somewhat Hellenized tribes south of the Danube), the javelins were much, much more common than the bow and arrows (after all, the peltast is the most famous type of Thracian soldier).

Here's a basic overview of the Thracian military in the Wiki.

Hmm. I've seen that image before...in an Osprey book about Scythians. So according to osprey, those two are Scythians. The scalp is Thracian though.  The cut off part the picture shows a fallen Thracian warrior, which the Scythian scalped.

Hey Taco was drinking. He had one more night before his Mexican vacation (in which he drank more). I'll begin the process of correcting said historical ****ups right now.
