...And no, I'm not talking about magic, but the posibility to buy(or find) a mushroom that, when eaten, makes you temporarely insane.(like the Vikings)

What about it?

There's actually a good bit of debate on whether they did eat mushrooms or not. Fly agaric would have been what they ate, but it's side effects were not very conductive to fighting. Halucinations aside, these mushrooms would cause muscle cramps, fever, nausea, and a range of bowel... problems.

But it is very possible that they did eat them.

"S. Odman, in 1784, first suggested that Vikings used fly-agaric to produce their berserk rages Ramsbottom cited 12 authors who referred to the use of these mushrooms by the Siberian tribes..."

"Fabing and Hawkins (1956) was convinced the Berserkers did, indeed, use fly-agaric. It is a very plausible explanation. Going berserk occurred as follows. The Norse took the mushrooms so that the effect came on during the heat of battle or while at work. During the berserk rage they performed deeds which otherwise were impossible. The rage started with shivering, chattering of the teeth, and a chill. Their faces became swollen and changed color. A great rage developed in which they howled like wild animals and cut down anyone in their way, friend or foe alike. Afterward their mind became dulled and feeble for several days. In 1123 AD a law was passed making anyone going berserk liable for several years in jail. It was not heard of since."

yeah, i remember that. It was in the daily grail.

Now that is very interesting! I shall try it and see what effect it'd have on me!

(Just kidding)

Eagle out...

(But I am sure I will break anything in my path, with mixture bloodline from my ancestors of celtic and viking, and I fear I might will also smash my computer into many pieces from my side effects from that mushroom... So that is why it is bad idea for me to ever try these mushroom... )

I doubt berserkers used mushrooms since, indeed, they would have caused a lot of inconvenient side effects. Shamans, however, used them a lot.

It's also possible that they renedered it down and diluted it a bit so the side effects weren't so bad. Probably, in fact. Just munching on raw fly agaric will put you in a very unhappy place.

yeh happy fly-juice could of been made, that stuff is wicked.
there's lots of other type of psychoactive mushies all over europe though hey? i don't really know as i live in australia but a few german and swiss friends i have enjoy the trip out to trip out.

I once heard that berserk is a kind of paranoia.

But considering berserk (and it's symptom) seems to be restricted in that area (I haven't heard of Japanese berserkers, or Chinese ones), I doubt it is a kind of paranoia. Rather, it was achieved by more artificial mean is reasonable.

But, also berserker looks and behave like a kind of extreme excitement and it seemed a certain family frequently had berserkers, generic facter is also possible. Like, mashrooms were more effective to a certain people.

By the way, some Japanese cook poisonous mashrooms.

the word beserker came from something to do with ancient warriors trying to take on traits of animals.
with packs of warriors with some name relating to wolves wearing wolf skins or something and more lone, solitary warriors called the 'berserkers' or something similar who had taken on the traits of the bear, wearing the skin etc.
THAT's very vague but i do believe it correct.. roughly. so the word and concept of 'berserk' has its origins in the bear-warrior of old... hmm hmm..

Actually I have tried "Fly Agaric" mushrooms. Very weird effect. They are not at all like ordinary Shrooms, it's more like a depressant. As if you're very drunk and half-asleep half-awake.

I think the ancient Aryans (India) used it as well and made it part of their religious rituals. It was probably brought to northern Europe when those tribes migrated.

It is also called Soma (like the drug in Brave New World).

(PS I didn't go berzerk or kill any one)

From Wikipedia:

"Consuming the mushrooms in doses of over 1 gram can cause nausea but also can cause a number of other effects, depending on dosage, ranging from twitching to drowsiness, cholinergic effects (lower blood pressure, increase sweat and saliva), visual distortions, mood changes, euphoria, relaxation, and hallucinations. In near fatal doses it causes swollen features, high rage and madness, characterised by bouts of mania, followed by periods of quiet hallucination. Effects appear after 60 minutes or so, peak within three hours, but certain effects can last for up to ten hours. The effect per volume consumed is highly variable and individuals can react quite differently to the same dose."

Anyways, personally I think it sounds like a rather silly idea.

I can imagine that would have some pretty cool effects inside a game... o_O

Some sort of blur, everything kinda goes fuzzy, more enemies appear, enemies and allies become indistinguishable, maybe give it a gentle tint of red, have the camera tremble just a little, and then of course you'd have extra HP that'd disappear afterwards, along with doing extra damage...

Though, I don't really like the idea of my berzerkers using mushroms. Factual or not. I'd rather think of it as a genetic thing passed through a family. Some sort of psychosis or something. Sort of like what Ryuta said.

People don't seem to realize that some people are capable of extremely messed up things without any outside assistance. Immediately turning to drugs or what have you as a reason always seemed like a dismissive cop out to me.

I doubt it'd be possible to add the visual effects, but a second method with it being something for a specific class would be neat.

about all i knew about berserkers was, they took some type of drug and they could stand pain.... cocaineeee do dooo dooo

sorry, and i doubt there was coke back then so pff.
