Renown Value in Battle

Hello to you,

I've noticed something in battle that is a little confusing, and using the Search feature on the forums didn't help so I'm posting it here. I'm playing Singleplayer Warband.

When I start a battle it says "Renown Value: Blahblah", but when I win a battle I tend to get less than it actually said at the beginning of the battle. So for example if it says "Renown Value: 11", I actually only get 3-7.

I'm wondering...
Does what you do in a battle affect how much renown you get? Is the Renown Value the game displays the maximum renown you can obtain in a battle? Or is it a bug?

Thank you for your time.

Are you letting enemies to rout? (i.e. they flee and disappear when they hit the edge of the battle map)  I've noticed your renown gets lowered if this is so, since you killed/wounded less than you originally encountered.

Only a maximum of 2 rout, I had thought that could be the problem, however, I wouldn't have thought 2 enemies escaping would reduce the renown by so much.

Edit: I take that back. Last battle a bunch routed. Still got the maximum renown. Odd.

I suspect it has to do with whether you fight the entire battle at once, or in several "rounds".

If you kill all enemies on the map but there are still enemies left waiting to come in as reinforcements, the current round ends, and you get back to the start-of-battle screen to choose whether to continue to fight, send in your guys without you, or flee. You are, however, rewarded renown for each round separately, according to how many enemies you killed in it and what the odds were. The renown value stated at the start of battle, though, is calculated on the assumption that all enemies are killed in one round, which might not turn out to be the case.

Not sure if this was fixed in WB, but in M&B the renown value would be recalculated for each round. Renown was calculated based on the strength of your party versus the enemy party, and you could get more renown by lowering the battlesize, since then there would be more of the enemy party left at the end of the round and thus the renown value of the next round would be higher than it would've been with a larger battlesize.

Its still like that in WB

I apologise for the late response.

I think it is due to routed enemies, I've been keeping watch and have noticed that the more enemies that rout, the less renown I get -- however, if the battle advantage is below -5 the impact on the renown you aquire isn't as bad.

You would think it would help your renown to have enemies routed. They would spread out and tell everyone they met how they got spanked by Sir Whatshisface.

Or Madam Bottomwaddle

There is definitely something going on with renown value in battle. I just had few battles and I get only 1/3 renown that was mentioned when battle begun. No one routed and I killed about 10% of enemies. I have to kill bandit armies(30-42) with 5-10 knights(+8 companions) to get even some renown(I currently have about 300 renown). Actually I thought this was a bug and started new game, because I couldn't get any renown in my last game.

I've noticed I always get one renown less than the announcement says at the beginning. I fight with the maximum battle size (150), so in small skirmishes there are no "new enemies" or "reinforcements" to screw with renown. And since I constantly scan for runners, I usually don't rout anyone.

It has nothing to do with all of this. There is a code in the Warband scripts that makes that only the valourous, great commanders and fighters get their renown (it is named "renown" for a reason). Personally I have never had such problems. +50 renown yeah.

Seriously, it the system might show at the beginning of the fight the renown you'll get but there might be some kind of error that doesn't calculate the renown you should get WITH your army, because the more men you have in your party and the better they are, the less renown you'll get. Because I mostly fight alone and I always get the renown it shows, but when I had 50 mamelukes I almost had no renown.

Here's something that will make things even more complicated: I'm starting to get reduced renown from tournaments, as well as battles.

My guess on this entire situation is that your renown gain from any source will go down as your overall renown rises, and it seems to be by a flat value. I went to a tournament and earned 18 renown instead of 20, and then I went and fought some sea raiders and earned 3 renown instead of the 5 I was promised, so it would seem that with my current level of renown, all gains are cut by exactly 2.

I don't think this has anything to do with routers whatsoever, it's just a function of your current renown level.

I'm inclined to agree with you. I've noticed quite a large drop in tournament renown since mine hit 1,200. False advertising boo! Heheh.

Well, thanks to everyone for the responses. If anyone finds anything else interesting, feel free to add it to the thread. Maybe it can come in handy for other players, too.

I did read through scripts in newest module system and there is a line that will limit amount of renown player will get. To get exact numbers its

((renown you are going to get)-(renown you have/200)) , round the result up and thats how much you actually get.

So with 1200 renown you won't get renown for 6 or less renown, 1 renown for 7, 2 for 8 and so on. With system like this getting 200 men armies is pretty much impossible. Especially because renown will get lower all the time when time passes.

Ive noticed that the value I get in the end is the same value the next round is worth (i.e. 100v500 and first round is worth 40 renown but at the end of first round (Enemy losing ~180) i get 24 renown. Next round is 100v320~ and worth 24 renown when i start yet only rewards 11 renown when i finish with that round. Next round 100v170 worth 11 renown at start, 3 renown at end.

Note those are values with maxed participants (150).

This is less than what Mount and Blade gave. When you won the round in M&B, you would get the exact renown value stated at the beginning of the fight. In warband, this value fluctuates heavily.

EDIT: This is with ~1800 renown. I just read http://forums.taleworlds.com/index.php/topic,105417.0.html which makes sense to me. This may be the answer.

I noticed my renown starts to drop over time the higher it is.

I tend to hover around 666 renown (no joke) and I check it every now and then. Sometimes it jumps a bit, but other times it's lower than this. I don't ever lose battles, so I can only imagine the more renown you have the harder it is to get renown, and that you also lose renown over time the more you have.

I'm copying this from one of my old posts:

The higher your renown, the less renown you gain for the same activities.  Any time you gain renown, the game takes your previous renown, divides it by 200, then subtracts the result from the renown that you just gained.  In your case, if you have 800 renown, the game would automatically reduce the renown you gain from any event by 4.

If you want to remove that reduction (so that you always get the full renown value no matter what), go to your SCRIPTS.TXT file and find the following:

change_troop_renown -1
31 21 1 1224979098644774912 22 1 1224979098644774913 520 3 1224979098644774914 1224979098644774912 7 4 0 32 2 1224979098644774913 0 2133 2 72057594037927940 1224979098644774913 2123 3 1224979098644774915 1224979098644774914 200 2106 2 1224979098644774913 1224979098644774915

The 200 is the divider I mentioned above.  To remove the renown deduction, simply change this to a very high value, such as 99999.  Or, if you just want to cut the reduction in half for example, you could change it to 400.

There is no limit to the renown you can gain.  Using TweakMB, I think I've gotten it over 10 million just for fun

good news guys. there was a major bug that didn't grant renown properly after sieges (it would duplicate the renown from the previous land battle--potentially giving too much). after being reported to bugtracker, sieges will now grant the right amount of renown thus opening up another source for you. since sieges typically hold the odds against you, i wouldnt be surprised if they're more generous than land battles.

also, the same applies for morale and loot which will also be granted properly after a siege for the next patch.
