Remounting

Ok so I have a nice warband of 30 or so Hired Blades, all mounted, I  go into a big battle and win. But now a number of my previously mounted men are on foot.
How can I get them back on horseback?
I can understand why you wouldn't be able to change a characters weapon type or armor.
Thats what makes a hired blade different than a mercenary, etc.

But I do wish that one could give them say blunt weapons.
So once you obviously have the battle won you could capture more enemys.
And remount them of course if you have the horses, or want to buy the horses to do so.

Also what happens to the loose horses after a battle?
Once & a while I'll have one show up in my inventory.
But you never see them as selectable items like arms and armor
after the battle. Oten I'll have a battle where I saw 3 - 6 horses who no longer have riders.
They just seem to disappear.

Also there is no way of disbanding just those who no longer have mounts that I've been able to find.

All I can do is put them in the front, hope they die in battle and then try to replace them.

Am I missing something?

Wouldn't a good commander after a battle sweep up ALL loose horses and use them to remount his troops?
Possibly even mount troops that were not mounted before? Or even keep them as remounts?

You can't, sorry.

New Mercs/Hired Blades might come mounted, but your current ones on foot will stay on foot.

The short answer?

Yes.

Is it possible in this version of Mount & Blade?

No.

I'd recommend you check out the new version of the Band of Warriors mod, for M&B v0.894. It features a line of fully customisable troops for hire, in addition to 25 Heroes that can be equipped with whatever you can afford to give them...

You can find it here: http://forums.taleworlds.com/index.php/board,87.0.html

1. I've had this too, where some of my hired blades spawn of foot. Not entirely sure whether it's a fault or they merely have a chance to be either mounted or on foot. Unfortunately, there's no way of getting them to definitely spawn on their mounts. Just seems to be determined by chance, though having not used the troops much myself I may be wrong.

2. There are mods which have added in the ability to customise your troops a bit more, such as the Customizable Troops, and also Band of Warriors. The latter gives you the option of hiring many hero companions which you can equip as you see fitting (so you'd be able to give the a sword and a back-up blunt weapon as well).

3. The loot from any battle is randomly calculated from the equipment used by your enemy. There will be a higher chance of finding a horse in the inventory when fighting a mostly mounted force, although horses seem to be rarer than weapons and armour. Not sure what you mean by the horses never being seen as selectable items, since if they appear in the loot or in your inventory you should be able to select them. In the middle of a battle, horses will run around if the rider is killed, and eventually meander to the edge of the battlefield and disappear.

4. No way of disbanding the unmounted troops unfortunately, as there's no way of distinguishing them on the party screen.

I think the idea is that some of the horses in a battle will be killed while others will simply flee, so you may only manage to get hold of one or two horses afterwards. Also, since the commander doesn't take the loot on behalf of his troops he isn't tasked with replenishing their supplies of horses and whatnot. The assumption is that they buy, loot and maintain their own equipment, which is generally what happened historically.

Hope this answers your questions.

Troops such as Hired Blades have only a chance of spawning with a horse, whereas other troops (such as knights and Caravan Guards) always spawn with horses. This is not affected by them losing their horses in battle, being told to dismount, or anything like that. There's nothing you can do to influence which equipment variant each spawned unit gets.

Are you sure? Unless they changed in this version troops were randomly spawned for each battle according to the template. As long as their template states they have the possibility of having a mount, then the number which will be mounted is random. The only thing that carries over after battle is experience AFAIK.

Really? I didn't know it worked that way ever Arch. I always thought everything was carried over since I'd see the same troops spawn time and again, battle after battle. They'd have the same face, same equipment and everything. I suppose it could have been random chance that made identical people spawn over and over like that, but it seemed like the same guy. I even named him. Steve the Swadian Militiaman. He was my only militia man at the time too. Not sure what version it was...

Definitely used to be random, I had a single Swadian man at arms once and his weaponry changed from battle to battle. Think it was last version, but might have been the .700's.

Course, it depends on how much variation is in the troop template too. Some are pretty much guaranteed to always have the same stuff, others can vary wildly.

My problem is that some of my Hired blades start mounted and then I have to dismount them.

Well I did have some luck yesterday getting infantry to mount horses while in battle.

Attacked a caravan with a lot of mounted Caravan Guards. Had at least 6 horses running around loose, so told infantry to go mount, and dang if half of them didn't. So Partial answer anyway.

Thanks all! <S>
