In America, Jewish and Middle-Eastern are far apart, while Iranian and Egyptian are virtually the same.  You can't explain that!

Asian and Oriental mean the same thing and cover a lot of ground. An Asian could be Chinese, Indian, Persian, Arab and some other races so it's a handy catch all for everyone who isn't Polynesian or American Indian etc.
