I released a first version of the translation, nearly all of the menus have been translated. I'm working on dialogs and items, and I'll post new versions as soon as I release them.

Here's how to proceed:

OK voici la procédure.

Ce n'est qu'une version "alpha", incomplète, avec plein de fautes sûrement, mais je corrige au fur et à mesure.

1) Dans votre répertoire \Mount&Blade doit se trouve un fichier language. Ouvrez-le. Il y est normalement inscrit "en". Changez-le en "fr".

2) Téléchargez cette archive, nommée "fr2.rar" et contenant un dossier "fr". Décompressez-la dans le dossier Mount&Blade\languages. Faites bien attention à ce que le nom du dossier soit "fr", sinon ça ne marchera pas. Le dossier devrait contenir trois fichiers.
Récapitulatif : vous devez avoir un dossier \Mount&Blade\languages\fr\ contenant trois fichiers.

3) Téléchargez cette archive, nommée "fr.rar" et contenant un dossier "fr". Décompressez-la dans le dossier \Mount&Blade\Modules\Native\languages\ sous le nom "fr". Elle doit contenir une dizaine de fichiers, dont les fichiers "dialogs" et "factions" par éxemple.
Récapitulatif : vous devez avoir un dossier \Mount&Blade\Modules\Native\languages\fr\ contenant une dizaine de fichiers.

I'm French and I love Mount&Blade.

And I've decided, even if my English level isn't very good, to translate it thanks to the language files which are in the Mount&Blade directory.
I've already translated half of the biggest file, and translated the hints too.
I'm not a 'professional' translator, but French players will probably be happy to play this game in French, even if the translation isn't perfect.

I have only two questions:
- what's the "tr" directory? Which language is this "tr"?
- can European peoples and especially French peoples purchase a license by the Internet?

When the translation will be finished, I'll post files there, and a tutorial which explain how to install the translation.

Of course, I do that totally free! I hope you never thought about ask me this question.
I just would like one thing (or two). In the next version of Mount&Blade, or maybe the next after the next (:grin:), can the dev team include a language setting? Like "Choose your language", and so we can choose all available languages like en(glish), tr, and when I will finish my work, fr(ançais).

I will publish my translation when I finish it, but I will improve it until it is perfect. So a new version of the translation could come with a new version of Mount&Blade.

Actually, I finished Hint and the biggest file, I just have to do the last one.
After, I will begin correction.

I just would like the devs to indicate me where are the dialogs with other characters.

To translate all the files, go into any game in mount&Blade, press alt+enter, then find a menu option called "view", and press "create language template". You will then get a language file.

I am trying to make a list of all translations possible, in a standard, uniform way. So if you could call your translation folder "fr" (it's all standard, you see), and give the following details:

Where to download the files,
What is it encoded with (I think French is Unicode)

If you are translating in Excel or Notepad, it will be ASCII.

If you are translating with Notepad++ it will probably be in Unicode.
 
So it's ASCII.

EDIT: I have some problems with the translation.

The accents (é ; è ; à ; ô ; etc.) aren't shown.
I think it's cause of the encoding (ASCII), but maybe I should "write" them differently in the file. Like when you write a web page in html, you need to write some letters with a special code. I don't know if there's anything like that in ASCII.

EDIT2: I just saw that the encoding wasn't "ASCII", but "ANSI". Are they the same?
 
Oh, I forgot that those letters didn't show...

DO a google search for "notepad++". You can change the encoding to Unicode and you can use the letters then.
 
I can change it to Unicode with the Windows notepad too, but when I encode in Unicode, the texts become English.
And when I save the file in ANSI, the game shows my translation.

How can I make the game showing Unicode translation?
 
In the Mount&Blade folder, there is a file called "language.txt". Open it, and chnge "en" to the name of the folder within the translations in it (possibly fr). The language file must be in the "languages" folder though.
 
I already did that.

Here's what I did:
1) Created a new folder "fr" in the "Languages" folder.
2) Translated it.
3) Changed the "language.txt" file from en to fr.
4) Tested my translation. Accents are showed, except for the Hints.
5) Removed accents from the hints' file. All rights, everything works, except that I haven't got accents anymore...
6) Created a new "fr" folder with the editor (you shown me, you know: Alt+Entr, etc).
7) Translated it (in part).
:cool: Moved it to the Modules\Languages folder.
9) Tested my translation: accents weren't there.
10) Changed the encoding from ANSI to Unicode of all the files that are in the Modules\Languages folder.
11) Tested it. The game was in English.
12) Re-changed the encoding from Unicode to ANSI this time.
13) Tested it. The game was translated in French, but like before, without accents.
14) I'm here now.

Please help me to reach the 15 step! :grin:
 
Does that have ui.csv and hints.csv in it, and does the other folder have the rest?
 
The folder has everything he had at the beginning. ui.csv, hint.csv, uimain.csv...

But I think you don't understand: now I have encoded the Modules\Native\Languages\fr\ files in ANSI, there is no more problem with the Languages\fr\ folder.
It's just that, when I encoded Modules\Native\Languages\fr\ in Unicode, the game was translated from fr to en, and that I don't know why. And when I re-encoded Modules\Native\Languages\fr\ in ANSI, the game was translated from en to fr this time.

I sum up:
Modules\Native\Languages\fr\ in ANSI --> game in French but without accents
Modules\Native\Languages\fr\ in Unicode --> game doesn't recognize the Mount&Blade\Languages\fr\ folder (and maybe the Mount&Blade\Modules\Native\Languages\fr folder too)

That is, I continue the translation with accents. It's easier to change letters with accents to letters without, than the contrary.
 
That is strange, because my Unicode translation seems to work:

The circumflex letters (ê, in this case) are unicode.
Why do computers have to be so annoying :sad:
 
That would be the problem. Notepad and/or excel cannot encode Unicode properly :razz:
 
The problem is that Notepad++ cannot encode in Unicode...

I have the choice between ANSI, UTF-8, UCS-2 Little Endian and UCS-2 Big Endian.

When I encode with ANSI, the accents appear in Notepad++, and when I try the three else, the accents are changed to small squares.
But I'll try to encode with UCS-2 (which seems to be Unicode) and see what happens in the game.

EDIT :
- UCS-2 Little and Big Endian -> Game becomes English
- ANSI and UTF-8 -> Game becomes French without accents

Note that, when I encoded from UTF-8 (accents appeared as small squares in notepad++) to ANSI, the accents became, er... "strange": like a s with a ¨ or the labels for Copyright and Trademark, or characters like that... Even a Z (the Z from Zendar, in fact) became something strange. But in-game, it is all the same as the UTF-8: no accents...

Note that, when it's ANSI or UTF-8, the accents don't appear, but they "eat" some letters like the beginning of the next word.
For instance: "Bienvenue à Zendar !" in notepad++ becomes "Bienvenue dar !" in-game.

I really don't know what happens. How did you, Cymro, to have the accents? Maybe I have forgotten one thing...
