Release lords then get negative rep

I had thought that releasing lords would improve my rep with them but now I am running into lords that are really angry that I released them, what's the deal?

True, some of them treat that gesture as humiliation and relation with them drop for something about 10,not sure.

This is determined by the AI lord personalities. I believe negative relations in such instances are triggered by 'debauched' or 'pitiless' personalities (not sure which one).

Helmuth 说:
Not only  that but if you release lords for free (after capturing them) allied lords will see it as a act of treason.

I've never been accused of 'treason' or lost relations with allied lords for releasing a lord I captured in battle....which mod are you using?

Helmuth 说:
No, you dont lose lord reputation, you lose faction reputation. For example, if you belong to swadia and speak with a khergit prisoner lord you can: release him for a ransom, or release for free. If you choose the first, no problem, but the latter will increase reputation with the prisoner by +10, increase relation with kerghits by +5 and decrease relation with swadia by -5. Lords wont care about it but if your reputation with swadia falls to -1 you will be kicked out.

Hm....I don't know what mod/tweak you are using but that is not native. In native, there is no dialogue option to release a lord after you capture him (you only have the option of warning him not to run away), and there is no negative relations hit with other lords or factions for releasing him on the spot immediately after the battle (on the contrary, you gain honour I believe).

Oh, then i have a modified game then. I also use the tweak to equip regular troops, it probably come from it. Sorry about that.

If it helps, it's pretty easy to spot the ones that give negative rep from the dialogue they give you when you capture them.  They're the ones that whine about the shame of having been captured in battle.  The idea is that releasing them only compounds their shame, and makes them resent you even more.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

There's generally a simple way of determining which one to release. If they say something about 'yielding', only then is it generally safe to release them. I think there may be one dialogue exception to this, but can't for the life of me remember what.

In general, yeah. People who talk about "I yield" or "Congratulations on your victory" or "Grant me the honours of war" etc. i.e. people who are being polite are safe to release. OTOH, people who say "Ach, the shame" or call you a dog, or something along those lines, are just going to resent you releasing them. The pattern is pretty noticeable once you release a few.

Pretty much.  As far as I've noticed the "Ach, the Shame of it!" ones are the only lords that will give you negative relations, whereas the ones tells you to "Call off your Dogs" won't reward you with extra relations afterward, but won't hate you for it next time you meet either (They'll just say stuff like "Last time you tricked me, but I won't fall for it again! >:O")

I only play mods that have integrated Diplomacy, so I generally release lords when 1) I am fighting on too many fronts, and I don't want to lose relations with the faction that their faction is friendly with, giving that faction an excuse to go to war with me; 2) their faction is losing territories to another faction that is not mine, and taking them prisoner would weaken their faction even more (I am particular generous with Swadian lords); 3) it will piss them off royally.

I like those paranoid lords who take offense at my acts of mercy, whose relations with you will heartily take a dive because you are playing with them like "cat plays with mice" (and in my case, they are right).

Look here, a (wo)man needs enemies. Nothing gives me greater satisfaction than pulling up my list of relations and seeing a handful of lords who have < -80 relations with me. You know those lords who give you the cold hard stare across the castle room and when you go and talk to them, all they have to say is "Oh, it's you....", like you just stole their last candy bar and raided their village, like they could just run over and stab you, but they can't because every time you've met in battle, you've gone out of your way just to be -the one- to de-horse them, like they've been hit by your morningstar so many times that it's left a permanent brand on their forehead that reads your name, like their entire life was wronged just by one chanced encounter with you on the wrong side of the battlefield....

Um, anyways. Nemesis lords make your game life fun, is what I am sayin'.....

About a hundred days ago in my save, my character was serving as a vassal for the Vaegirs. We got in this war with the Sarranids, and managed to take one of their far Western cities. And there, I fought CONSTANTLY. I mean, I had about 80 men, which were about 30 Knights, 30 Marksmen, a couple infantry units, and my heroes. And those were the glory days, lemme tell ya. I beat every battle party that I encountered.

Once, I encountered several Sarranid parties that jumped me. It was about 300 men on their side, just my 80. Somehow, we crushed them, and I took 2-3 casualties.

My point is, during that time, I encountered many lords. I figured that, the ones that have the "nicer" dialogue, where they compliment you, are safe to release. I built a couple lord's relation with me to around 30 because of that war, it was pretty nice. The ones that talk about the shame of it, or insult you/your party, those are the ones you want to keep. Or, if you want cash, and you are constantly fighting, then capture them all, you can build back relations later.

I need to make some corrections that I've seen in this thread.

Whenever you release a lord from battle, you will gain an instant five relations with that lord, regardless of their attitude. When you talk to them later, the debauched lords (refered in the Module System as 'sadistic') will have their relations drop by 15, netting -10 for taking the honorable route.

The dialogue for the defeat of a debauched lord is "I give up! I give up! Call back your dogs!" I believe people are confusing this with the dialogue of the quarrelsome personality, "Enough! You win today, you dog! Ach, the shame of it!" The quarrelsome lord does not mind being released. Indeed, his dialogue upon being released is "I'm free? Well... Good bye, then." However, the dialogue for the debauched lord foreshadows his future decrease in relations, "Am I? So refined is your cruelty, that you would rather see me free and humiliated, than in chains. Enjoy your triumph!"

However, quarrelsome lords are douches and you shouldn't be friends with them anyway.

Nice analysis, this is definitely going to help me in my campaigns. Kudos sir, kudos.
