Relation penalty when giving fiefs to lords

Hello,

I'm currently the king of my own faction. I've conquered about half of Calradia with only Nords, Khergits and Sarranids remaining. Their kingdoms are very unstable, so their lords change faction or are banned frequently.

Most of them come to my capital to serve me, but each time I'm obliged to give them a fief or else their relation with me keeps dropping.

My problem now is that each time I give a fief to a lord, several other lords become more angry towards me. Some are even hostile (-60 to -80), while the other half is devoted to me (90-100 relation). Even my former companion and lord Lezalit, who is now pretty hostile to me, defected from me and took Dhirim with him.

I've been giving a fair lot of fiefs to the angry lords to calm then down, but each time they turn more angry when they don't receive a fief, while some who are devoted or loyal to me don't mind it.

Do I need to have a very good relation with them so they don't complain anymore? Or it it something else?

It's a rather annoying feature of native gameplay, the easiest way to work around it would be to use the Diplomacy mod, and then hire a chancellor and each time you have a new fief to assign he can tell you who the majority of the lords support. That way you'll get less angry lords.

And with Diplomacy you can also send gifts to your lords to raise your relationships with them.

Actually I would say the easiest way is to get TweakMB and remove it all together

That said, welcome to the headache that is running a large kingdom! This is why for a good chunk of the game I only run with 7-10 lords... much easier to keep everyone happy.

Now I tend to do things in a funky way... see I have a reward system, you join my campaign and fight along side me, you get a fief if/when one is available! The lords that continue to get angry because they are not getting fiefs also never join the campaigns and usually get indicted before they can run away and join someone else... If I were to cater to them and give them fiefs till they liked me I would have a bunch of whiny brats owning 3/4 of my kingdom! I would rather have those nice loyal vassals who take up my cause owning that much.

That said to minimize the damage done to relations, talk to your fellow lords, specially the angry ones and give the fiefs to who they feel is most deserving, this will give you a relation boost not only with the lord who got the fief, but those who thought he should get it.

Also it is usually a good idea to start with someone who has no fiefs if there are any... they usually get the support anyway and you very rarely get any neg rep for it.

You can avoid this mess by simply choosing the right lords for your faction.

Spotting honorable lords while being a vassal:
- when released after a defeat, talk to them again and gain relation
- when declining mission no relation drop

Honorable lords in own faction:
- lord drops 2 relation instead of 3 when not agreeing whom the fief goes to
- lord drops 2 relation instead of 4 while having no fief
- lord suggests other family/faction member while having no fief
- lord gains 2 relation instead of 1 when talking to them after successful siege
- lord nominates vassal with "no land and income" rather than familiy member (works only with villages)

Try to recruit only big families and faction members at a time.
Eg: if fighting swadia, recruit only swadian lords, honorable swadians will always support swadians even outside family. When you are done with one faction, move to another and work it entirely. You will lose standing with all rhodoks if you give land to swadian lord. You will rebalance it when you give fief to rhodok lord.
So, there is no point having 2 sarranid lords when most of your vassals are swadian and rhodok. Those 2 lords will always support eachother and no one will ever support them unless you voting on their first village (no land and no income).

I will keep this closely in mind ty:wink:

Necro request for clarification.

Does this mean that you can recruit honourable Lords from a faction while fighting that faction ? Or do they only come your way if they lose a war to another faction while you remain at peace with them.

I'm assuming you always release after victory in battle.
