Recruitment. by Amman D'Stazia

This applies to all versions of native m&B, and most mods as well.  I will mention one known mod alternative as well....

You start out alone.  This does not improve your chances of glory and riches, so you ought to grab some friends/cannonfodder.

There are two recruitment principles.  The first is companions.  Borcha and Marnid are the two companions available in native M&B.  To recruit them, you need to FIND them and TALK to them.  They are in towns not far from where you started.
When you talk to them, keep asking questions.  Marnid will tell you he needs a particular piece of clothing.  Borcha won't give you a direct request, but if you then talk to the OTHER person in the room with Borcha he will give you a quest involving Borcha.  You need to pay him money to begin this quest.

I think you are all far enough now to finish the recruitment for these two yourselves!

After they are recruited, these two cost you no wages, but you will have to buy all their kit.  At first they have no money, but as you give them different weapons and armour, they will get the money YOU give them.
There are many mods which offer a large number of NPCs, (companions) and the logic is the same.  Some do not require any initial 'item' or payment.

The other principle is hirelings.
There are three recruitable types in Native M&B.  Townspeople, only available in Zendar, Vaegir and Swadian.  The V & S types are available in any town of the correct faction.
You need to go into the town inn/pub.  Speak to the innkeeper and you will have the option 'I need to hire some troops'.  If you select this you will end up at a purchase screen, unless you are in an enemy town, in which case you will get shown the door.
You need to pay a small fee per person for these recruits, and they require a weekly wage or else they will desert.  In return for their pay, they equip themselves.

Mods exist where you cannot recruit in the inns unless you have a certain item or have reached a certain level.  Other than that inns are open recruiting cenres for all.

Hireleings are cheaper, initialy, than companions.  They die with frightening ease though, and will often spend half their time unconscious, so in the long run, they are not better.  The main advantage is that you can have lots of them!

Apart from recruitment, there is also rescue.
If you attack an enemy who has taken prisoners, then, at the end of the fight you will have the option of absorbing the rescued prisoners into your own group.  This is the quickest way to get some high-level fighters on your side, as you can rescue knights and menatarms too!
