Recruiting odd units - specifically, manhunters.

I believe that any unit will offer to join your party when they are rescued as prisonners from another group. Is there an easier way to get manhunters in the party than rescuing them this way?

I ask because I make most of my revenue by enslaving bandits and other ne'er-do-wells into productive work, and manhunters are a great addition to the party (especially once they upgrade to slave masters!) but they are so rare...

Any advice is appreciated. If anyone has any advice regarding the best way to get certain units into your party, please amaze us all with your wisdom!

Short Answer: No

Long Answer: No

Very Long Answer: You could mod it so you can hire manhunters...

My favorite thing to do is to find a large enemy group, lead them to some manhunters, and then engage the manhunters in dialog until they are forced to fight. Then, I wait until the manhunters are defeated, and hopefully a number of them were knocked unconscious. I then attack the enemy group and get some more manhunters :). The main problem with this is that it is VERY time-consuming, since battles between AI parties tend to take a long time to resolve themselves.

Or, much simpler, you could mod townsmen or vaegir peasants or swadian peasants or whichever you want so that they can upgrade to manhunters. This is extremely easy to do with the unofficial editor.
I actually added equipment to all the undead units still hidden in the game, linked them with upgrade paths, and made it so I can upgrade/corrupt most bottom-level hireables (peasants and such) into undead. Just seems cool to be able to lead an army of the undead.

The undead are disabled in the game normally; they got taken out for realism. But, even if you never see them now, they're left in the units of the game along with their faction. For that matter, there are a lot of other units, parties, and factions which are currently unused, but the rest will probably be officially put in the game eventually.

To enable undead as an upgrade path, you have a bit of work to do in the unofficial editor.
You may be able to simply switch the faction of a unit which is in the game to fcn_undead or fcn_ghouls to make them look undead, I'm not sure though.

Anyway, I decided to add back in the undead only as an upgrade path for me. On the units tab, you'll find trp_undead, trp_undead_horseman, and so forth. First things first, they're stripped of equipment, so you need to give them back some equipment in their inventory. Remember not to give the low level guys too powerful equimpent, since they likely won't have the attributes and skills to use them. Of course you could change their attributes, but I chose not to.
After equipping them, you need to make an upgrade path for them. You could have the undead walker upgrade to an undead horseman, have them upgrade to hell knight, and so forth.
Then, change the second upgrade for the townsman unit (and/or some other peasant units if you like) to undead walker, and then you have an undead upgrade tree.
Takes a bit of work, but hey.

I enjoy converting filthy peasants to undead. My undead army swells. Muhahahaha, and all that jazz.

when manhunters are attacked, you can join the fight, tell them to stay in place, knock them out with stones and retreat, letting the enemy win and capture them.

That is brilliant!

I would sometimes lead them into battles they would obviously lose ... but this idea is much more efficient.

Thanks for that,

Just don't do it when you have an army of your own.... I've thought of doing this before but if you have your own army and you join the fight, you may end up losing some of your troops to the autocalc after retreating. SOOO ANNOYING

Are manhunters that much better than Swadian Knights? Or how is this beneficial. I have had the chance a bunch of times to take them, but I haven't.
I am pretty new to this game and figured out how to get people to join my party and stuff, and have just used the swadians I capture, and bought a couple, with a total of 28 now.
Thanks,

I don't know, but the fully upgraded manhunters (Slave Chiefs) are higher level than Knights for either faction, accoriding to the upgrade chart, so if level can be relied upon as the best indicator, they are. But that point is surely open to debate. Sadly, as most people will be loyal to what they have already invested in, I expect you will see manhunters poorly defended in such a discussion, so I reccommend trying it for yourself! I once had a party of slave drivers and we did very handsomely until I ran into two Khergit raider parties one after the other...

Nope. Maybe lead your opposite faction (if you are Swadian, Vaegir...) in to a group of sea raiders, hoping they will get knocked out, then attack the party.

i think the easiest way to get man hunters is by editing the conversation file. just add some numbers behind the 6 0 and u can add them just by talking to them...

like someone said here once, when they attack a party that you can later attack, join in, knock them out and don't take them as prisoners, so the party will. if it's of the enemy side you will need to pay one of it's lords first.
