Recommendations on City Building games?

Well, anyways, the other day I was looking around the game store, just looking for something interesting, and then I got the sudden urge to get a city-builder game. So I go back home, I decide a roman type one would be cool, and I check to see if there are any. So, I was pleasantly surprised (yet surprised nonetheless) that there were around a dozen of them. Anyways, they all looked kind of cool, but I wanted to check with you lads to see what the best one was.

Heritage of Kings: The Settlers. Its kind of an RTS with a story behind it, but it does have city building. Its not exactly Roman, but it'll do the trick if you're bored

Well, I got that one a few years ago. Played it for a while... eh, it was okay. Took forever to get anything larger than a village though, if I remember correctly.

Yeah it did. I would suggest either of the Battle for Middle Earth games, but that's probably the farthest from what you're looking for. Do you want games with war in them? Or just city building simulators?

Well a mix of both is nice. Like for example, in Stronghold two I would build the largest and most complex castle I could make, and then I start the invasions, just to make it a bit more exciting.

OK, pretty much any Stronghold game would have been my next recommendation. I'm all out of suggestions for now, but I'll look through my old games and see if I find anything you might like.

Heh, I grew up on Stronghold. Twas my first strategy game, and first game as a whole, except for Zoo Tycoon

Anyways, whats your guy's thoughts on 'Imperium Romanum'? Looked a fair bit interesting.

The latest Settlers was actually pretty good. Possibly because they returned to being an actual city builder / economy management style rather than a half arsed RTS.

For a Roman city builder Imperium Romanum / Grand Ages Rome / Whatever the **** Haemimont have decided to call it in your locality is pretty good. The sequel adds a couple of neat features like being able to select a family, but it's not a huge step away from the original. I'd suggest checking them both out (there's demo's out there) before deciding - you can probably get the original + expansions/campaign packs for the same price as the sequel, so unless there's something that grabs you in the second you'll probably get a lot more game going for the first.
Caesar III isn't that great to be honest. It's basically Caesar II remade with modern graphics. It's not a bad game by any means, but there's nothing to make it stand out (particularly now the online servers have been shut down).
Civ City Rome took a lot of stick on release but I don't find it too bad. I actually prefer it over CIII in some aspects. Uses the Stronghold 2 engine and is buggy as hell in some respects, but if you stick with it it's a rewarding game.

On the non-Roman side of things, Children of the Nile is still the best city builder in existence. It and Alexandria are cheap on Gamer's Gate.

If you can wait a few months, Tropico 3 is set for September release.

And the award for "Best-Written Essay on RTS's" goes to... Archonsod!

I would agree with most things that were said there, especailly the Children of the Nile rating. Imperium Romanum looked fun, but apparently it got terrible reviews.

Ehh, Children of the Nile? I think I had a demo of it or something. Was it a older game? Had lots of Ostrich's you could hunt?

Yeah, it's 2003 or thereabouts IIRC. Egypt, 3D engine.

Imperium Romanum is a damn good game It was criticised regarding the number of bugs on release, but those were quickly patched. Beyond that it seemed to be reviewed by a number of drooling retards who couldn't quite grasp the difference between a city builder and something like Rise of Nations. Look at gamespot for example, the guy seems to spend the entire review complaining about the gameplay being outdated. Dumbass.

Ah, I see. Wasn't there a older version of Children of the Nile though? In 2d or something?

I have Children of the Nile and it's expansion pack Alexandria, from Impulse, and I must say, they are excellent games - they take time (which I don't have at the moment), but... very good games, for a good price.

Alright, I'll make sure to get that when I get the money
