Traditional style, docu-drama whatever, pass on your suggestions!

Just watching this below, probably one of the most realistically portrayed Romans I've seen. Or at least to what I imagine them to look like.

Also stumbled upon this yesterday, basically the narrator is claiming there was no great Anglo-Saxon invasion... not sure I agree with it but interesting none the less.
I'd be interested in hearing people's thoughts on this

Haven't watched the video - but if he doesn't think that happened, how does he suppose they got there, and furthermore if there was no invasion why would so many native Britons have continued to jump ship and settle in Brittany?

I haven't watched the video either, but the theory is that the anglo saxons just settled on the coast and integrated peacefully, rather than the big dramatic hengist 'n' horsa rebellion Bede talks about.

I'm not fully convinced. While hengist and horsa were probably at least semi-mythical, the whole idea of Saxons as peaceful pastoral settlers is rooted in Victorian romanticism.

Shogun: the supreme samurai  https://youtu.be/vfPnWE-7XGk
includes interviews with Stephen Turnbull and others, as well as
illustrated plates by Richard Hook from the book Samurai Warriors

Samurai Headhunters!
includes updated research and interviews with
both Stephen Turnbull and Antony Cummins

The Ninja: Shadow Warriors
also includes Antony Cummins

That Vespasian one looks interesting, pretty stock standard. I like the Shogun one! It hit the right spot for me right now, very stimulating.

Ah right.. Yeah, I don't buy it.

Well, there's The Western Tradition with Eugen Weber. Very good series, but it has its flaws, (maybe on account of its age) like claiming that vomitorium was a room for Romans to throw up in and then return to their feast. It's a very entertaining one nonetheless.

And then we have NHK's Silk Road which comes in two seasons. All in all, this production took 17 years. Yeah.

Also the Battlefield Britain series is excellent, but apparently YouTube has blocked the videos of them due to copyright issues.

Loved this one! The battle scenes were hilarious though

Barbarians Rising. It's really interesting to see Rome slowly descends into destruction as the barbarians tried everything they could to put Rome down. It actually tells you the lives and achievements of a few historical figures during that time, Queen Boudicca, Hannibal, Spartacus and some others.

History Channel favorites...

The Dark Ages
interesting narrative but
anachronistic costumes...

The Plague
better production and more
historically accurate props

Engineering an Empire
featuring Peter Weller - RoboCop

Conquest of America
Simply, a Masterpiece...

Ah, the good old days, right? When History Channel was actually about history rather than Aztec demigod alien conspiracy theories and Hunting Hitler and ****.

Except now when I watch them I point out how the horrible inadequacy that the shows on the History Channel tended to show. They go for the simplest telling of the subject because they are afraid the vast majority of television viewers are retarded.

The general lack of interest in History is frustrating. So much to learn from it, yet seems to be massively overlooked. The school I attended didn't even teach history previous to WW2.

This channel is a great watch for those interested in Roman history.

Imma just drop in and recommend Dan Carlin and everything he does. He has plenty of well researched, interesting topics for his podcasts, some of which last for multiple episodes. IIRC Carlin, like he likes to remind, is not an historian, but he still does a great job at researching these topics with his team of, I presume, actual historians. There's plenty of subjects that he's made podcasts, but I would recommend the series on the Mongols and the Eastern Front. You can't really go wrong with any episode of Hardcore History, I would recommend every one of them if I could.

Great channel for Youtube style documentaries on battles/wars
