Reason to Use Shields

Ever questioned yourself if was it needed to use shields in battle? ´´Hmm, maybe if I get rid of my shield I would be able to use more arrows, or perhaps another weapon? A Two-Handed Weapon would be nice.`` Here's your answer:

ALL HAIL THE SHIELDS!!111!!1

Did you wear your shield on your back during the fighting? You might want to talk to your archers.

When I play as an archer I love enemies with two-handed weapons

He obviously put the shield on the back after the rain of arrows.
And yes, shields are extremely useful in most cases.
One can also carry a shield for getting close to the enemy and then switching to two-handed in melee.

Indeed. And yes, my shiled was ´´switched off``, or just put in the left if you awnt it that way. I got shot from various arrows, and when the battle ended I just putted my shiled away so I could take the screenshot. But I have screenshots of wearing the shield as well, however there is not so many arrows in those screenshots (No photoshop; I am a very bad editor). This screenshot was taken while I was playing in the Native.
As you can see, my character was using (as well as an Bastard Sword and an Chavalry Shield) a Lance (forgot name) and a Two-Handed Military Schyte, which I use as you said, Adorno. It's a good strategy to use the shiels during the spawn-castle way (going through the way since the place where you ´´born`` until the place where you kill BOTs) to protect yourself from arrows; then, just before meeting the enemy, I pick up my lance and do an beautiful thrust against the enemy, and just before someone gets to attack me I switch to my Military Schyte, which does 50-70 damage (as I usually hit from above). I have Lv7 in Power Strike, so yes, it does quite some damage. Most average units get killed in a single strike, and Elite troops (Swadian Knights, Nord Huscjarls and so on) get killed in 2-4 hits, in most of the times; sometimes I get lucky and hit their heads when attacking from above, so you can kill them with only 1 strike as well (tested and confirmed ). Two-Handed Military Schyte is obvious (at my view) the best melee weapon of the game to use when speaking about Swings. I have about 320 Skill with that weapon (I guess I have 5 or 4 in Weapon Master. Maybe someday I post here my character info; about 3400 Renown, 9 estates when left my Nation, Swadia, I can lead about 227 or 228 soldiers, most of times 9 NPCs and the rest is Swadian Knights. They are very good!).

Fro sieges there are also meat sheilds, aka your own troops.  They're great if your sniping the walls.  Running up the ladder, alas, there is no help.  You can't go forward with your shield to your left or right, where all the fire comes from, and your meat shields have a bad habit of kicking you off the ladder 4 feet from the top.

I saw that picture and thought, "Why doesn't he just use a quiver like the rest of us?"

I'm glad you clarified the arrows in the back bit.  I just thought you a big coward.

Reinforced Horseman's Heater Shield, 16 Resistance, Size 40, the best purchase I ever did
I really recommend any character consider having a shield

Hello. I started playing Warband, and now I have Nefestus, not Sanutys. I took better screenies, and more arrows too, take a look:

No animals were hurt trying to achieve this... No, sorry, that's a lie, my horse died at the start. Achieving this was easier than you think, I just bought a very powerful shield (check the last screenshot for info) and stood up against a lot of archers for a long time. So... Once again, don't forget to buy a lot of shield before going to battle!
All of the screenshots putted here were taken at the Native Mod. No modifications were made at all, it is just a strong shield against a lot of archers, and a print screen button.

Right OK 2 things, this is the Native section of Mount&Blade anything to do with Warband goes into the Warband section.

Secondly, this thread was long dead, you have sort of a relevant point (apart from it being only relavant if the topic was about Warband but whatever)

why is a Khergit shield this big? their size is supposed to be around 40, like the horseman's shield.

Another question - were you using cover? The AI does have enough wits to shoot at the legs, you know. Not even Rhodoks are impervious to shot.

EDIT: Oh, and another thing - when you're up against an archer, you don't just stand there and bask in the thickness of your shield. It's dishnorable and retarded. Only by shooting that archer does one gain glory in the kill(it takes more skill than just putting a thick board in front of yourself, y'know).

Speaking of Shields, i think the way the shield stat works is ridiculous.

It should not increase shield coverage beyond its physical presence and defy the laws of physics and cover an area where the material is non-existent. In my observations, i would aim for an exposed body part that was clearly not being covered, yet it hits the shield anyway.

Shield stat needs to be reworked!

I always assumed that the increased coverage given by the shield skill comes from a skilled wielder being more able to move the shield in the right position. After all just holding the shield in one position is a bit unrealistic.

seconded. The shield skill isnt about making the shield bigger but expressing the movements one can make to catch attacks. In the same way, it doesnt make a shield stronger, it just lets you allow blows to glance off a bit more than hitting the shields square on

not to mention that what the OP did is not an achievement. shooting all those archers before they shoot you is. looting a good shield from a particularly tough opponent is. Putting a lot of skill points into abusing an unrealistic game mechanic and buying a good piece of equipment most definitely isn't. I'll give credit to Khergit shields, they're awesome. The only shields I like. But what is shown in this thread is not an achievement and most definitely not something to brag about.

The image is cool though.
yes, it is. Khergit shields with arrows in them simply look awesome, no doubt. I'd wish it was done in a less noobish manner, though.
