*ahem*

I've done a bit of swordfighting, both Japanese (Kendo) style, and early medieval (Viking) style, and have noticed that both swordfighting games and movies tend to forget the absulutely most important bit of any swordfight: Getting your opponent down on the ground so you can kill him off. I suspect this is because killing-the-other-bastard-style swordfights are long forgotten and replaced with sport swordfighting where you usually want to avoid serious injuries - things quickly get ugly when you're slammed into the ground with pointy objects in your hand.

Many medieval combat schools taught swordfighting like this:
First: You learn to wrestle your opponent into the ground and break his neck or stab him with a dagger.
Second: You are given a sword or other pointy object to make it easier to close in on the opponent and then ram or wrestle him into the ground and stab him.
Then: You learn fancy stuff like parry and riposte.

Hands, knees, knives and teeth are for close range CC, Swords are for medium range CC, Spears are for long range CC.

I'd like to see at least a simple implementation of this in the game. I feel right daft when I'm backed into a corner and try attacking my opponent with a lance or two-handed-sword when he's a mere 4 centimeters away.

In short: Using a medium range weapon like a sword is silly when it would be much easier to knee your opponent in the groin, headbutt him, disarm him or just grab hold and slam him into the ground.

Mayhaps the standard attack could simply be substituted by a knock-down-attack when your opponent is Realy Close And Breathing Up Your Nose? The animation could be anything fitting - swordhilt-jab, knee-to-groin or just a push.

I agree with the suggestion you make about knocking opponents to the ground who get to close to you. I've suggested this before in the form of bashing someone in the face with your shield when they get too close, but it probaly should also be implemented for two handed weapons somehow.
