Recruit
Is it me, or is it near impossible to attack Forest Bandit hideouts on Realistic difficulty in the early stages of the game?

Every bandit is armed with a bow, and they NEVER miss. On realistic it only takes 2-3 arrows to bring myself or my men down. As a result, the few randomly selected soldiers I'm forced to attack with get absolutely annihilated within seconds. SECONDS. In my last assault I lost half of my force just trying to get close to the first 3 bandits we saw. Even when I am several hours into a campaign, with plenty of armored veteran infantry, somehow the game will provide me several unarmored recruits for my assault who simply cannot approach the bandits. Since I'm limited to a few soldiers and no reinforcements, why can't I choose the men I bring? Though, even if I get lucky enough to have 3 or 4 veterans with me, they rarely keep their shield up as they approach and generally don't get much further than the first or second group of 2-3 bandits. Am I missing something?

I'm enjoying the difficulty of Realistic overall. The increased damage makes the fights more deadly and more exciting. I love that, in the larger scale battles where I have room to maneuver, avoiding missles and correctly flanking becomes even more important. But these bandit hideouts feel completely imbalanced considering they are some of the first missions offered. Am I not supposed to be engaging these bandits this "early?" I can't imagine it being right to need fully armored knights to kick in some bandit camps.

Not only do they absolutely annihilate your troops but there are so many of them, definitely just stay the hell away from those guys

yeah they are hardcore, i can't deal with them unless i have 3 times the numbers, and just forget about their hideout you will get get it ahah

Eh, in Warband they were also a pita until you had actual armour, and then, not so much.

yeah those archer are insane, and your own guys don’t bring up shields as they advance

Use F3 to order shield wall to make your troops hold up their shields (you have to command it because they move slower in that formation). Use F2+F1 to order your troops to face the right direction instead of the closest enemy.

Congratulations you are now immune to arrows

Thanks I didn't see how to shield wall, I'll give that a shot. I guess I'll have to just wait until everyone has a shield.

Not only they never miss, it almost feels like their bows got 100% accuracy.
Not that much joy atm.
Guess i will skip my try to make a battanian bowerygang and switch to a sturgian shieldwall.

Thank you, helari. Guys, this game just came out today, and most of you haven't even examined all the options at your disposal. My roommate kept doing F1, F3 and just letting his guys run in and get killed. I told him to slow down, think, take your time. There are tons of new features in this game, take an hour and just experiment and learn. It will prevent you from sinking hours of misery into your playthrough.

That said, shield wall did nothing. Super helpful in the field, but useless in forest bandit camps. Shield wall helped get through the first few groups, but eventually i get overwhelmed. They have 25 camped and I'm only allowed to bring 9 men out of my 49 man army. I don't understand why the attacking force is limited so much when the camp size is so large.

To be fair, that's historical cheesing. There were several battles in the First Crusade that relied on that tactic. You know. Once they ate all their horses.

Thank you!
Sweet revenge is coming.
Uh, so how many arrows do they pack anyway?

I'm pretty sure if you kill the surrounding forest bandit parties, it lowers the number inside the hideout! worked for me with the sea raiders! (And then promptly get the infinite loading screen at their hideout)

Yeah I’ve learn if you put your Mens in shield walls and then charge. They charge with their shields up !

That's also the kind of information I was looking for. I'm not necessarily trying to call foul play. I'm new to the game and open to strategic approaches so I'll try that next.
