Just a question regarding the Celts (once again, apologies for that): What's your take on Celtic leg armour? From what I've seen very few references display its use, and I've not seen much archaeological evidence for the idea either (although I've not researched it too much). I've seen the idea that Celts used minor forms of 'hand' armour such as leather vambraces. It also doesn't make too much sense that the Celts, who were regarded by many as having superb cavalry, would not have leg armour to protect these horsemen.

Edit: Should clarify that I'm referring to the appearance of leg armour in the mod...

Pants and large shields is already plenty more than most of their neighbors in term of leg protection, especially if we take on the cavalry, most of the other nations rely on leather boots and simple footwear with few exceptions like the heavy cavalry of the steppes or Persians. I guess their type of warfare does not justify the need for it and the sole few exceptions are some nobles buried with pieces of hellenistic gear that could very well just have been war booty.

Fair enough, I forgot that purchasing even one bronze shinguard isn't exactly cheap for a regular soldier of the more Mediterranean factions in any case. Ah, so trousers were actually quite protective in comparison to have nothing but a skirt *cough* Samnites' overly short skirts *cough*, not too surprising, but it's still interesting that simple woolen/linen trousers (AFAIK) actually offered some level of protection. Thanks for the quick answer, though.

I dare you to wear woolen pants in Mediterranean climate with almost 30/35°, then we can talk again...

True, I'd rather not do that. Then again, wearing skirts that reveal your butt seems a bit unnecessary...

morale and mental constraints do their work. If Herodotus yet noticed how inconsistent was the term bàrbaros itself and made the first reflection about relativity of customs and habits, you should not be so severe against samnitic\italic dress. You won't be amazed that the North african tribes used to show off an hairstyle that nowadays is so mainstream and in the eyes of a Greek man that looked so ridiculous and strange to be noted.
It's a matter of our (good) taste not to show any male ass or worst in this mod, but the conscience of the body in the ancient times was not affected by any religious costriction, whereas deformity (and I insert children and old men\women though) was not allowed to be represented.

Again, common sense can help the most. In this case Mediterranean climate and vegetation, but also mountainous environment, actually can justify the choice of comfort against better looking wide clothes regarding warfare.

Indeed, but I'd like to point out that I wasn't being severe. Of course, to view ancient customs of clothing and cosmetics with a modern mind and eye is foolish. We've seen many times that the idea of nudity (most of the time in men, as you mentioned) was not viewed as unfavourably as a slightly more public thing, but of course nudity in women was usually thought of more as art and beauty, whereas nudity in children was a different case. IIRC the Minoan women let their breasts hang out, possibly because it wasn't viewed as a 'private part' by that civilisation.
I happen to live in a temperate region with mild vegetation and average summer temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius, yet to me wearing a very short skirt doesn't seem necessary. Although I am speaking from a modern point of view. In any case, I was simply making a bad joke, not trying to start a minor debate/discussion on the length of skirts in the Mediterranean. We should probably end this, as it's getting a bit off-topic.

I remember reading somewhere that Celtic pants were actually generally made from linen, although they lived in a colder climate, so that doesn't really change much...

"Civilized" people propaganda, pants are the real deal and the Celts were years forward in that matter. Two thousand years passed and we're mainly using pants not skirts, checkmate.  :fruity:

I'm kidding of course, diversity is fun and know that we don't have much taboo and would the modelers not mind looking at references and uvmapping wangs we'd have nude warriors. They'd be okay for female breasts but we're not trying to make a porn mod either (Russians beat us to that one by a long streak).

They were quite inaccurate, portraying the Iberians as nude Russian women  . Seems like the EB team had no problem performing the mentioned task, only later they realised they should release a 'censory' patch, just in case their fans started getting suspicious...

The glorious days of sweat free armpits!
http://belovedlinens.net/fabrics/history-linen.html

and, however, the more we argue and the more a single aspect can be discussed (supported by valid arguments), the better the progression will be. In this case a public debate is fundamental, and interesting even for the modders, they can save some of the time spent in researches. So I don't see any malice.

And I look fab in my bermuda, the male skirt 2.0, you clumsy trousers barbarians!  :fruity:
