Alright, a new thread. Just hope it is more successful than my other ones.

So, the theme: rate the quote quoted above you, and then post another quote. Quote must come along with the one who said so.  No ninja'ing.

Alright, to begin with:

"I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."-Voltaire

It'd be better suited in Fun Stuff. Not a bad idea for a thread though.

As for the quote, Voltaire never actually said that. It was Evelyn Beatrice Hall, writing Voltaire's biography, who coined the phrase while trying to describe some of Voltaire's beliefs. In any case, it's a wonderful expression of the value of free speech. I give it full marks.

My quote: Men fear thought as they fear nothing else on earth -- more than ruin -- more even than death.... Thought is subversive and revolutionary, destructive and terrible, thought is merciless to privilege, established institutions, and comfortable habit. Thought looks into the pit of hell and is not afraid. Thought is great and swift and free, the light of the world, and the chief glory of man.
— Bertrand Russell

4/5 Russell was a good man (but he overestimates thought/ideas and fails in thinking thought can be free)

"We spent a lot of time talking about Africa, as we should. Africa is a nation that suffers from incredible disease."

George Bush -Gothenburg, Sweden, June 14, 2001

George Bush? Not much nice, but still. 2.5/5

"I have the heart and stomach of a king, and of a king of England too."- Queen Elizabeth I.

I've never been a fan of non-fictious quotes, but 3.5/5.
(This is going on the assumption that I may post fictious quotes)

"An open mind is like a fortress with its gates unbarred and unguarded." -Blood Ravens.

It's awesome.

"There are three kinds of lies. Lies, damned lies and statistics." It's not clear who said it.

It's cute, but inaccurate. Statistics aren't lies. It's very well established math. Statistics are often misused to support lies, but they aren't lies themselves.

The only angels we need invoke are those of our better nature: reason, honesty, and love. The only demons we must fear are those that lurk inside every human mind: ignorance, hatred, greed, and faith, which is surely the devil's masterpiece.

- Sam Harris

Epic words!  5/5

"The only thing new in this world is the history you don't know."    --  Harry S. Truman

Carlin is great. 5/5

My one regret in life is that I am not someone else.

                                                            Woody Allen

4/5

He has good reason to wish to be someone else.

What is it the Bible teaches us? - raping, cruelty, and murder. What is it the New Testament teaches us? - to believe that the Almighty committed debauchery with a woman engaged to be married, and the belief of this debauchery is called faith.

-Thomas Paine

3/5, Thomas Paine was a brilliant man, but this quote doesn't seem to capture any of the intellectual prowess he so usually emanated.

When you disarm the people, you commence to offend them and show that you distrust them either through cowardice or lack of confidence, and both of these opinions generate hatred. - Niccolo Machiavelli

5/5. Machiavelli's great.

"I have nothing to offer you but blood toil tears and sweat."- Winston Churchill

5/5
Churchill is my dad. The tank that is, not the man.

"There is no way of dealing with the Frenchman but to knock him down - to be civil to them is to be laughed at. Why they are enemies!" - Vice Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson.. Winner of best name ever, since 1758.

4/5 You have to love a national hero.

"Give me a place to stand, (and a lever long enough,) and I shall move the earth" - Archimedes

The part in the brackets is often left out, I believe, to make it a more impacting statement for the plebs. As a side note, I just got a new, really high-paid job at a marketing firm so now this quote is really quite personal to me.

5/5. Archimedes was epic, and what he said is actually right.

"Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."- Dr. Seuss

That's nice, I guess. I'll give it three out of five points.

"All generalizations are false, including this one."- Mark Twain

A clever quote from one of the cleverest men in history. 5/5

"You can gain no knowledge of existence through continued use of hypotheses which are shown to be unworthy of a theoretical status." - MeridianFrost

True 4/5

"A nonconformist--untamed, ungelded, and undomesticated--a rebel is someone who resists authority, control, or convention. Like Prometheus, Satan, and Spartacus, he refuses to kneel and obey." - Mark Mirabello
