I'm not uptight!! Though I wouldn't class myself a metalhead. Metal is just one genre I enjoy. Tbh, getting into them is like any genre - starting small. Start with the generic, mainstream ones. This way you can sometimes relate, then once you get used to that you can venture to heavier, longer, or different vocal styles... etc.
Or for some metal bands, you'll hear an acoustic song, or a ballad and think "Oh, that is really good. Lets check some more of them out" then you find them metal. Very metal. But sometimes because you liked that acoustic song and you're used to the voice, and the stylings, then you start to get into their heavier stuff.
Personally, I started to get into metal via The Rasmus(Yes. Don't say a bloody word.

), Linkin Park and Evanescence waaaaaay back(none of them metal, but they were my gateway to "heavier than pop or indie"), 'bout 9 years ago. Then Guitar Hero II got me into metal too. Mainly Avenged Sevenfold and Megadeth. I never grew to like certain styling in metal 'till I got older, and I've been experimenting and exploring these past two years.
So say, start off with something closer to home, some type of mainstream metal. Something along the lines of
Bullet(technically Metalcore, just),
Avenged Sevenfold(technically not metal. More along the Hard Rock lines now) or
Metallica. Yeah, there are plenty more, but these are just examples?
But I mean, you don't want to be starting with
this,
this or
this(most mental **** I've ever heard.
). Things like those can just sound a mess to non-metal listeners(and Job for a Cowboy are **** even if you do.

).
Note that none of these are generally favoured in the metal community(besides AA or Metallica to an extent.) Just some examples. Granted, you may not like any of them but hey-ho! Could always try you again with a huge post about Prog.
