R.E.M. calls it a day :(

Iron Maiden's probably the only metal band I really like.

@Facemelter

Just cause a song is performed/written by a metal band doesn't make it a metal song.

RHCP performed Otherside, doesn't make Otherside rock/funk.

I know, I have argued the same thing with other bands on these forums. However, I never said that song was metal now, did I? I was going to say if Ruthven liked that song, then he should check out Opeth's Damnation album.

You can't just start someone who doesn't listen to metal on some kind of hardcore album.

Or Judas Priest. And then once they're hooked, tell them Rob Halford is gay.

If you want to find a way to appreciate metal, first get accustomed to the instruments, and then the vocals, or vica-versa.  Then, once you're a bit more comfortable with certain aspects of metal, move on to other aspects you may not like.

Try this, for start. :3

I think I'll stick with my own musical taste for now. The Opeth singer has a really nice voice, but it's too monotone for my taste. That's my real issue with most metal I think. If I wanted to listen to screaming I'd just get a girlfriend.

I wonder what life would be like if Stevie Wonder had gotten into metal at the height of his career.

You make a sweeping generalisation that is as fallacious as it is ignorant, then you have the audacity to say "no offence"? I think someone is telling fibs here. The main issue for me is those types that condemn the entire genre of music based on misconceptions possibly spawned from the media, without thinking "I better check if they aren't actually full of ****". Despite popular opinion, metal is actually a very broad category

It wasn't meant to be taken entirely seriously, sorry if it was too rude. Obviously a lot of people like metal, and what I said is an exaggerated negative view of a person like me who just doesn't get metal's appeal. While the genre might be broad though, I think my reaction to pretty much all of what could be defined as metal ranges from 'this is ok but rather boring' to 'arrgghh my ears, what is this noise?!'. My earlier post was meant to be a provocatively cheeky prod in the ribs to metal fans, who I know are plentiful here, rather than downright rude.

If you poke me in the rib, I will gouge out your eyes with a grapefruit spoon and rip out your entrails with a coat-hanger.

It would just be a gentle poke in the ribs, it wouldn't hurt! It wasn't a metaphorical 'stabbing with a knife to the ribs'  Perhaps you have been listenting to too much metal, it is clearly giving you violent thoughts.

It means that the amount of metal bands are slowly gaining on the amount of 80s rock bands.
But since the last time metal was worth listening to was in the eighties, that's not really a good thing.

what does metal music have that makes people defend it to their dying breath?
Neckbeards.

As far as im concerned good riddance to this awful band, which its annoying whining vocals, and general lack of any guts

They sure got a lot of press over disbanding though, it was like everybody in the news business thought they were the Rolling Stones or Elvis. I thought, oh R.E.M is no longer going to be a music group I didn't even know that R.E.M. was still around but thanks for the update you news hounds, how about that war in Afghanistan is that still on?

Yeah, metalheads are always so uptight. That's partly why I dislike their music so much, most of the fans and musicians don't know when to relax. I've also never heard metal I actually liked. And while I appreciate that other people can get into it, I think metal is one of if not the only genre of music I have never found a song that I liked.

Soo...
I'm not uptight!! Though I wouldn't class myself a metalhead. Metal is just one genre I enjoy. Tbh, getting into them is like any genre - starting small. Start with the generic, mainstream ones. This way you can sometimes relate, then once you get used to that you can venture to heavier, longer, or different vocal styles... etc.

Or for some metal bands, you'll hear an acoustic song, or a ballad and think "Oh, that is really good. Lets check some more of them out" then you find them metal. Very metal. But sometimes because you liked that acoustic song and you're used to the voice, and the stylings, then you start to get into their heavier stuff.

Personally, I started to get into metal via The Rasmus(Yes. Don't say a bloody word. ), Linkin Park and Evanescence waaaaaay back(none of them metal, but they were my gateway to "heavier than pop or indie"), 'bout 9 years ago. Then Guitar Hero II got me into metal too. Mainly Avenged Sevenfold and Megadeth. I never grew to like certain styling in metal 'till I got older, and I've been experimenting and exploring these past two years.

So say, start off with something closer to home, some type of mainstream metal. Something along the lines of Bullet(technically Metalcore, just), Avenged Sevenfold(technically not metal. More along the Hard Rock lines now) or Metallica. Yeah, there are plenty more, but these are just examples?

But I mean, you don't want to be starting with this, this or this(most mental **** I've ever heard. ). Things like those can just sound a mess to non-metal listeners(and Job for a Cowboy are **** even if you do.  ).

Note that none of these are generally favoured in the metal community(besides AA or Metallica to an extent.) Just some examples. Granted, you may not like any of them but hey-ho! Could always try you again with a huge post about Prog.

Also, I quite liked a few REM songs. Not that many, but a few were guite good. Saying that, I don't kow them well enough to make a comment about whether it was a good or bad idea for them to cal it quits.

Err. They are one of the most successful and well-loved bands of all time. So you COULD say that
