another quick question...everyone seems to be declaring war on me?

1) Make sure you are playing the latest version (2.025)

2) The world will react to your actions (personal and as a king), so be mindful about making enemies (no matter if you are a adventurer or a king)

3) If your kingdom is big the game starts to treat you as a big threat, so even far away kindgoms are likely to start wars against you (before you can get to them)

4) your neighbors are likely to start wars when you are smaller

5) religion also plays a part (Christians x pagans)

if you want to know more about diplomacy (which is a complicate system), check out the guides thread. And if you want to understand a particular scenario, you will need to describe in detail what you are doing, your kingdom, etc. I recommend in this case that you create a a new thread, as it is not a quick question scenario.

Do monks in your party have any effect other than being meatshields? Morale boost in or out of combat for Christian troops? Help converting villages? Help relations / persuasion with Christian lords? Help chances of recruiting from Christian centers / monasteries / prisoners? All of the above?

monks like to live on monasteries, take care of vegetables and drink lots of mead. Maybe you are thinking about priests? Can you post a pic or at least the troop name?

Bonus should be visible on your reports (like the morale one or in your camp)

Monk. I raided a monastery and converted my prisoners, ended up with 6 monks in party. No upgrade option on them.

This probably tells me my answer, will check tonight, thanks.

oh those monks! Yeah they can't be upgraded. They just want to go home. Let them go home, you evil pagan!

I don't believe they give any bonus as they are not suppose to be in your party at all.

looking at dialogs there is even a chance you can break some quests if you try to talk to them (in very specific situations). So watch out for that

and a quick search at the game code did not show up any bonus for that particular troop. So my answer, without any testing, is nope, no bonus, meatshield they are.

Does your dog care if beef / pork / chicken you feed it is smelling or rotten? Will he still level up if the meat has gone bad?

Started a new game with normal recruiting instead of beginner, and cheated myself a small bow. Now I don't have the option to ask village leaders if there are any stray dogs around. I never got permission from the village elders to recruit, but got it via storyline from the Jarl. Do I need the elder's permission to recruit to get the stray dog dialog? Or did I break it somehow with the cheated bow?

I've seen comments to the effect that the ingame troop tree from the camp menu displays information about a troop's skills and gear. How do I access this info? All I can get is the pictorial tree, not info on any specific troop.

questions

1) You can edit a post instead of double posting.

2) Make sure you are playing the latest game version

3) The troop tree screen has a text telling you to click on the portrait of a troop. Now go back there and click on one of them. Read the text/notes in the new screen to learn how to use it (preview stats, inventory, dress up the dummy with different gear, etc)

4) Avoid cheats if you are playing storyline. It may break your game.

5) You can ask the elder, but you need to visit him in person (walk to talk to him). No permission needed. Can't do it on storyline special mission, so visit a random village.

1) Figured separate question separate post, sorry, will abide by rule in future
2) Opted into the beta, might be the issue
3) Neither left, right, double, ctrl left, alt left, or shift left clicks produce any effect, hence the question
4) Fair enough
5) Not getting the option to ask when walking to visit elders in non-quest related villages

Looks like 4 is the culprit and I broke something. I cheated in the bow and a set of arrows ASAP, went to the archery range in Doccinga, and when I left the heavier cheated set of arrows was deleted instead of the trainer's set. So I'm guessing that's the script I broke and it had unexpected knockon effects. New game it is.

UPDATE: Confirmed, new game worked fine until I cheated in an item, which broke all dog related dialog scripts. Even when I got the dog first, after cheating I couldn't feed him anything but chicken despite having other meats in inventory. Cheaters never prosper.

UPDATED UPDATE: Even a non cheat new game bugged out the dog menu until I opted out of the beta and forced an update to the newest version of both the mod and the base game.

beta is over, it is now the official version  (2.02:cool:

if you can't talk to the elder in a random village (not Doccinga), sandbox game, creating a new campaign with 2.028 then create a post (ticket) on the support forum with a download for your savegame: https://forums.taleworlds.com/index.php/board,376.0.html

as you can see on the patch notes:
- remove stray dog dialog from Doccinga tutorial

That is a non official rule for the entire forum, just so you are aware. Moderators usually dislike triple posting, while community will complain at double posting

I'm on the quest "Revenge: Ask Sigurd Snake in the Eye". I'm nearly done with it (I think?), and have found a part where I can either

offer to exchange Bodo for my mother, or tell Sigurd I'll recruit 600 (!?) men for him.

My question is: are these paths mutually exclusive? That is, if I do the one, will I not have to do the other? As a Norse pagan shieldmaiden, my main goal here is keeping on the side of the Danes and the Lodbrok brothers; I'd like to get in Sigurd's good graces, but if that's not possible, I'd like to at least side with the Vikings against the Christians. I also don't trust Sigurd to uphold his end of the exchange bargain, so I'd rather find a different way. My suspicion is that the recruitment path is just a distraction, and regardless of what I do, the exchange path will have to take place eventually. Is this the case? Can I actually join the Danes and turn Wessex pagan by "playing nice" with Sigurd, or will accepting his recruitment task just result in 8 hours of ultimately-pointless busywork?

-edit- Also, while I'm at it, is there a storymode guide available? I've looked, but haven't found one.

not that I am aware of. You can check the lore section if you want to discuss spoilers for the storyline.

Main storyline is linear with some sidequests (optional goals). At one point it splits into two paths leading to two main endings (help the christians or the pagans).

There is a second minor storyline in Ireland, not connected with the original. You can play that one even on sandbox mode.

Is there any way to change the default division group placement?

if you are using formations (DLC feature) you have extended options on the battle menu (F1-F2-F3... keys).

You can use one of them to save/store your own custom formation, which will then be used on the other battles. You can, as a example, put cavalry to a flank, archers to the front, spears to the center, swords to the other flank and save this configuration.

You can also change your (the player) default group/division (infantry, archers, etc) by going to Camp -> Options. This will change how the groups position around you.

Alternative: you can even disable this feature and use Native system (everyone charges in a disorganized way and tries to kill the other team)

Will companions
who die during the storyline campaign still show up afterwards as adventurers (or in taverns)? I've looked at patch notes for the last few patches but didn't see anything about it in there; I can't recall if this issue was corrected a while back, or if there were technical limitations which prevented a fix.

no

ps.: remember to not include spoilers in this thread

hi
when some of your troops are ready to be upgraded from the XP you get from training etc and have the little + sign next to their unit type, and you don't upgrade them (ie to save on the increased upkeep costs), do they continue saving up XP for the their next "level"?
