are they actually effective (when used by AI)

like, is a rhodok carrying a pike good?

because if the enemy gets too close, your pikeman can't get any thrust behind it

Sort of... not really.  It's better now than it used to be, but it's still far from advantageous against anything but cavalry... and that's only if the units aren't densely packed because of the issues with thrusting you already mentioned.  The polearms with overhead swings are notably more effective, and of course those with a full range of swings like spears, bamboo spears, warspears, double sided lances, glaives, etc. etc. work very well.

One thing that has worked better than I thought it would is pikes in dense formations and sieges, though.  The A.I. seems to have picked up the idea to spam overhead attacks in recent patches, and that can be a good thing so long as you have stronger sword and boarders in front.  It's tough to maneuver your units into the best formation to take advantage of that, though, without some micromanagement (like having two infantry groups for rhodoks, or something like that).

I'd really like to see all thrusting polearms universally buffed in damage, or have their minimum effective ranges reduced/removed.  I mean... I understand that they'd be much more powerful in multiplayer because of that, but their inherently predictable weapons that have limited ways to attack... and often are heavily penalized for using anything other than thrusts.
