Question regarding patrols to move faster

When I make patrol regiments, and we all enter combat, do the other patrol regiments get experience and level up?  I haven't noticed it yet so I'm wondering if I have to have them in my party first and level them up, then put them in a patrol?

Any help would be much appreciated.

To my knowledge you cannot upgrade troops that are not in your party (includes your patrols, other lords, etc.).  So, what I always do is put fully upgraded troops and mercenaries in my patrols.  Its not very cheap, but my focus is more on the quality of troops.  In fact, what I love most is being outnumbered 3 or 4 to one and through tactics and quality of troops totally destroying my enemies.  But that's personal.
