Question on pack horses

So apparently in the guide, it says that keeping horses in your inventory makes u travel faster on the map. Ive tested it and it does seem to work. But anyone have any idea what is a good number of horses to keep in the inventory? its linked to total weight right. is there a formula?

I have used pack mules (horses) for a while now. My general rule of thumb is to check the speed my party is moving over open ground in the day (no forests). I add pack mules until my party can travel at speeds between 7 to 7.5. At those speeds only mounted bandits have a decent chance to catch you and your goods. I generally keep like 6 pack mules.

Also you get the cheapest lousiest horses as pack mules. Fast or slow horses do not make a difference as pack mules.

i think the most effective # of horses is either 6 or 7, then they start weighing you down

Argh! Why haven't I noticed this before...  I've been struggling with the slow travel speed. I'll have to buy some pack horses immediately when I get home from work.

A couple other factors that can affect your speed is:

a. Have a mounted Party. Infantry and prisoners will slow you down.
b. Bigger Party size will slow you down. A smaller party is a faster party.
c. I believe a lower Morale will also slow down your Party movement.

And remember, It doesn't matter if the horses you use are Champion chargers or lame half dead stinky saddle horses. They still effect your traveling speed the same.

Also remember that if you buy the lame horses with some skill in first aid ( 1 point is enough but more speeds it up ) they change from lame to regular. With good trade skills you can make money off these horses. Another trick is to look for lame war horses for your NPC's let them be your pack horses and then as they are upgrade to normal hand them out to your guys. Lots cheaper then buying regular war horses.

You know, I've been playing M&B for years, and I've always heard this, but I've never noticed it in action. And I always have someone in the party with 5+ FA, Surgery, and Wound Treatment.

I guess I could just be impatient. And the only horses whose condition I tend to watch are serviceable horses - warhorses, hunters and the like. For pack mules I always buy the cheapest, lamest horses I can find - I suppose it's possible that they've healed in my inventory, but I never pay them any mind, so I don't know.

I have noticed that 5 is optimal.  After that, additional ones slowed me down.

Also, it DID matter what type of horse they are.  You will notice a definite difference between 5 heavy sumpters and 5 coursers.

The riding skill of members of your party also affect speed, but it usually gets negated as soon as you pick up some infantry. Just import a char with riding skill 10 and see how you fly across the map....

Korz, first aid as party skill or personal skill?

Anyone in the party. Can be you or a NPC. As for the types of horses I have not noticed any diffrence by horse type. But it could be small enough of an amount that I don't feel it. Riding and party size plus items in inventory are the biggest factors to speed. If you have mounted troops if you have infantry it doesn't really matter what you do you will kill your speed right away.

Yes I noticed it recently myself. If your party members have improved their Riding skill, it can give a noticeable boost to speed. And the Path Finding skill also improves your traveling speed on the overland map.

Horses will heal, no idea if it needs a skill.  Also, 18 items of food? I guess ur a merchant?  I only have like 6 items of food with 100+ men, but if I need more I just raid a village.

I believe you mean "Wound Treatment" Korz and not first aid.

If someone else can verify this I'd appreciate it.

And the effect is very noticible. Without wound treatment, horses take forever to heal in your inventory. With high wound treatment it takes a day or so for them to get nursed to health. Every single horse I bought my companions was a lamed horse nursed to health

also I'm pretty sure that riding skill does NOT contribute to travel speed. In fact I'm almost positive that it says in game somewhere this specifically. Having mounted troops, however, does contribute

It could be wound treatment. I was told some time ago it was first aid. And I always just pick up one of the NPC's that start with both skills at 3 or something like that. So I never tested it down to the actual skill. So it could be.
