Question on Adding Unit

I've looked through the forum and couldn't find this, but I might have missed it.

Anyway, here's my question:
I've added my own special unit (Viking Raider) to the game as an upgrade from Mercenary Swordsman and placed it at the end of the troops.txt file (copy/pasted from Hired Blade with changed name).  Then I opened up the unofficial troop editor and proceeded to add it as a viable upgrade path for Mercenary Swordsman and then added/removed weapons and such until it fit what I was looking for.  It's supposed to be somewhere between a Sea Raider and a Huscarl for balance purposes.  This is what the entry looks like:

Whenever I open the game though, my Mercenary Swordsmen cannot upgrade to Viking Raiders too, only Hired Blades.  Is this because I have to start a new game for this to take effect?  Would I be better off just changing the Hired Blades' item list or would the same thing occur there?
