Just wondering, I was wondering whether we can use bump maps on models. Would be really cool and make our models nicer by ten fold for sure.

good question, you should probably pm him, and alos can you please tell me the answer =)

Bump mapping makes my terrain all jittery.

If your going to add bump mapping to people, please make it subtle. Making everything totally bump mapped makes things look stupid.

a bump map is a texture that goes over the top of a normal "diffuse" texture telling the PC which parts to make the illusion are "bumped" out using shadows and highlights.

I atually belive that M&B uses normal maps which are somewhat more complex and better.

Yes, you can use bump maps on the models and the like. You need to fiddle with the materials.brf file and and texture_names.brf. If you aren't very familiar with a hex editor I wouldn't even bother though.

How about trying to find out instead of immediately asking and embarrassing yourself?

Maybe some of us aren't as proficient with hex editors as others. The only things embarrassing in this threat are childish, immature flamebaits.

But back on topic, thanks n008. I'll go read up on bump maps and see if I can fancy some of the Onin no Ran models up then .

Thorn, that's completely beside the point. I'm no coder/graphics artist or anything, I'm hazy on the subject to say the least. However, if I for some reason wanted to know, I'd make at least some kind of an effort to find out for myself before making a post and asking. That's the point.

If you don't have any knowledge on the subject, don't interfere. Engine capabillities aren't that easilly figured out. Hex editing is pretty hard and time consuming, and just few are capable of doing anything like efficient hex editing skillfully. Your point is plain childish and nothing more.

If you just want to flame, go elsewhere o_O.

*Sigh* Again, that doesn't matter, because an answer to his question would have been easy to find. He was asking for a definition of the term "bump map", not seeking complicated technical information, and even with a token effort he could have found the answer by himself.

And I wouldn't call that flaming anyway, by that definition you'd be flaming me right not. You're, like, so childish, and you're hurting my feelings etc.

Anyway, this isn't going anywhere. How about we just agree to disagree?

Who are you talking to okiN? Anyway, the question was, "I was wondering whether we can use bump maps on models." Which happens to be a yes, it's just rather difficult at the moment since you have to do it by hand. I tend to mention what's involved because I get 2-3 PMs per week asking how to add new items etc. Just saving myself some time.

How about... the guy who replied directly before me?

Thorn, did you think I meant you? Is that why you got so worked up about it?

Maybe I should have quoted to make it more clear...

Sorry for the confusion heh, but my point still stands really. Asking questions is never wrong. No need to be rude anytime in life really.

Thank you, Yoshiboy for clearing that up for me.
